Key to Muscle Fitness Revealed

– Reported, May 13, 2013

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – Researchers at Sanford-Burnham’s Diabetes and Obesity Research Center have found that genetic material (called microRNAs) link two characteristics of fit muscles: the ability to switch between slow and fast-twitch muscle fibers and the ability to burn sugar and fat. They also discovered that active people have higher levels of one of the microRNAs than sedentary people. Their findings suggest microRNAs could be targeted for developing medical strategies that are aimed at improving fitness in people with injury or chronic illness.

“In this study, we wanted to determine, on a molecular level, what makes a muscle fit during development or following exercise. This information is relevant to our efforts to improve muscle fitness in many health conditions, such as aging, cancer, and heart failure. These findings may also prove useful for our active members of the military, who become ‘detrained’ during injury and recovery time,” Daniel P. Kelly, MD, senior study author and director of Sanford-Burnham’s Diabetes and Obesity Research Center, was quoted as saying.
