Russia to start sales of cigarette packs with warning messages and images

– Reported, July 13, 2013

Starting next week, cigarette packages in Russia will carry warning messages and images, a health ministry official said Tuesday, as part of new federal legislation. President Vladimir Putin signed the anti-smoking bill into law in February. The bill will ban smoking in public places, restrict tobacco sales, and ban representations of smoking in media content aimed at children.

It is estimated that 400,000 Russians die every year due to smoking-related illnesses. The rate of teen smoking is also particularly high, with an approximated 25% of 13-15 year-olds currently smoking.

Several of the Health and Develoment Foundation’s programs address the issue of smoking in Russia, including Everything That Concerns You, a national healthy lifestyle program aimed at young people.

ETCY helps teens build the skills and knowledge they need to make informed, responsible life choices through entertaining and engaging activities and media materials. We look forward to the positive impact on current and potential smokers that the new legislation will bring.
