Cell Phones Could Cause Sleep Trouble

Cell Phones Could Cause Sleep Trouble

Reported February 04, 2008

Do you have trouble sleeping? Then you may want to unplug your cell phone. New research says it could be disturbing your zzzz’s.

Using your cell phone just before you sleep.. or even having it on your nightstand… may interfere with a good night’s rest. That’s what a small study of 71 men and women claims. One doctor says, “The amount of time it took to get into slow wave sleep also was a little delayed by about six minutes if you were exposed to cell phone radio frequencies.”

The study by Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan and Sweden’s Karolinska Institute looked at radio-frequency waves or “RF” emissions from cell phones, to see if it slowed down your ability to fall asleep. The doctor says, “It was seven minutes and whether that will really affect a person the next day is arguable. The subjects themselves didn’t notice any difference.”

The study, which has not been published in a scientific journal claims three hours of mobile phone “RF” before bed may cause headaches and hormone changes that can cut short your deep sleep cycle. But, many chronic health conditions and even medications can cause sleep disturbances. The doctor says, “What we already knows disrupts sleep is a very long list. Medications that are prescribed or taken over the counter can have a profound impact on sleep.”

There are many other studies including one from the World Health Organization that have found no link between cell phone use and any kind of health problem. The Mobile Manufacturers Association in the U-K called the study inconclusive.. saying using a cell phone before bed is no worse than drinking a cup of coffee. I guess it’s your decision to make.
