She has appeared in features and covers of American fitness magazines, which highlights her tough but effective no-nonsense style. Pauline is also the star of “The Butt Bible” by NBC/Universal – a workout video complete with a fitness system that helps beat any backside into shape.

Pauline Nordin is a top international fitness model. She is in conversation with Namita Nayyar President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: How did you get started with bodybuilding? Tell us about your journey that took you to the top of the world of being a top international fitness model?

Ms. Pauline Nordin: I was 17 and was in the “not eating and doing 500 sit-ups a day” routine. I accidentally bumped into a Muscle & Fitness magazine and saw the fitness model on the cover. I was terrified, she looked CRAZY, but in some way it caught my attention, I went back to buy the magazine and I remember it felt like I was reading an Adult Magazine since all these half naked bodies were in it.

Anyway, I realized it took dedication, discipline, a lot of exercise and a strict diet. I liked that and felt this was meant for me. I decided to become a pro bodybuilder, went to my first gym and told the trainer I was going to be onstage in 2002 (3 years later) and I needed to get muscular. Said and done, I trained nonstop for 3 years, went on stage and became the “Teen National Champ” three years in a row and runner up in the Senior Division Under 52 kilograms 2 years in a row. Ms. Namita Nayyar: What is your motivation to take a multi-faceted personality of a IFBB fitness competitor, Pro Figure athlete, fitness model, actress, fitness trainer, journalist, personal trainer, media personality and nutritional expert ?

Ms. Pauline Nordin: Fear of being a failure to myself. I’m scared I’ll wake up when I’m old and I didn’t do all I can to make me succeed. Success to me is being independent, being able to spend my life the way I want. It’s not easy, it takes commitment and never ending commitment to excellence. I’m a workaholic and the president of my own company. I have almost a million followers on Facebook who depend on me daily for motivation. I can’t just quit. There’s no alternative for me. If I don’t give my best and run the course with what I have then there will be no more options. So what motivates me..: I’m the one who’s in charge of my life.. If I don’t do it 100% with max effort I will not be satisfied and happy with myself.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Share your exercise routine that you do to maintain such a bikini perfect and Figure athlete physique?

Ms. Pauline Nordin: I do cardio 6 days a week around. I vary the intensity and style but it’s a steady piece for my formula. I don’t function without a lot of exercise. In the evening I work out with weights. It’s 5 days or 6 days a week.

The split is usually:

My ambition is always to rest more but I struggle with it and have since I started in 1999. When I travel I plan to rest and in order not to sneak in a workout I don’t bring workout wear or shoes!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What is your diet? Do you take a particular fixed regulated diet comprising of nutrients and vitamins to keep you in perfect health?

Ms. Pauline Nordin: My Concept is called Fighter Diet. I named it fighter diet due to what it takes to be lean 365 days a year: discipline, dedication & perseverance. That’s a Fighter’s Mindset. To maintain a lean physique, health AND strength to build muscle I need to balance it well. I rotate between a leanness inducing phase of high volume of veggies, lean proteins like egg whites, protein powder, lifetime cheese (www.lifetimecheese) and pink salmon, with some fats from fish oil, olive oil and dark chocolate with refeeds which are similar to carbohydrate loading.

During refeeds I usually double my oat bran I have on regular days for my first meal, I eat lots of kabocha squash or I make a pasta with ground organic lean beef. Usually a sorbet for dessert. It’s important to find a protocol with frequency and to learn when your body says ‘I need fuel NOW’. Going on a low calorie diet has never been an option for me: I work out a lot and need to eat. I have a big appetite. And, the method on gaining muscle like the amount I have does not come from starving.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do for hair care?

Ms. Pauline Nordin: I have eczema and flare ups are pain in the butt. Anywhere my clothes are snug to the body I get rashes. Around the breast line, on the back, anywhere my skin touches the clothes with sweat. So, imagine the annoyance when I sweat twice a day and my skin doesn’t want me to… I try to prevent it from coming back by using barrier creams, baby powder, loose fitting clothing etc. I know that if I worked out naked I wouldn’t have the problem, however that would also cause saggy breasts and the fact I would have to be naked with strangers. No thank you!

Regarding my facial skin, I stay out of the sun and always have. It’s something I’m teased for all the time, that I’m so pale, I should go out in the sun etc. I lived on the beach in California, I live on the beach of Miami beach, but I don’t sun bathe. I also wear a broad hat. People argue that I need the sun for vitamin D, but I take it as a supplement and monitor my blood level. No deficiency here. The sun is the number one aging factor. That’s why I avoid it! I’m 32 now and compared to most in my age group my regimen works because I have smooth skin and no sun spots.

I always use sun screen. Not one day I have been outside without it. My skin is sensitive and I am not big on makeup.. i like a good eye brow, mascara and dark circle concealer. That’s about it.

My hair and I have a love hate relationship. I never style it. Working out, sweating every day, twice a day leaves no time for styling. I never brush it until I naturally get dreadlocks and I know I have to comb it… But I give it some love with conditioner. I put it in first, wait a few minutes, then shampoo while the conditioner is still on the strands. I never comb it because my hair gets ultra frizzy when it’s wet. I don’t know why…. I take BIO-SIL and have done for a few years. Not sure if it works but my hair IS thick and long.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have done bold photo shoots. What advice you wish to give to the women of today to be body confident in order to do such bold modeling?

Ms. Pauline Nordin: Whatever you choose to do modeling wise, as in what to show of your body, in what fashion and in what forum, always make sure you know WHY you do it.

What’s the motive? It’s tempting to go for the typical ‘Hello there, I’m sexy’ pinup style fitness shoots, but once you go there, unless you have a plan, you’ll always be a fitness bimbo instead of someone of expertise and knowledge. My most sensual photo shoots have always had an edge to them. I’ve always directed them so I am portrayed as the strong, independent feminist I truly am. My most daring photos were published in Muscle Mag’s American Curves, it was their biggest feature ever published with 18 pages with
me.

None of them were showing a woman being there to simply ‘please the man’ or being eye candy without determination and integrity. This is why it’s exciting that the feature is as popular amongst guys as amongst women! And I’m talking about straight women who see my photos and it gives them motivation to hit the gym.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Tell us about your experience as the trainer, diet coach and the leader for the Swedish team that you led your country to victory in 2006’s Biggest Loser?

Ms. Pauline Nordin: It was 3 months of being a psycho drill sergeant/psychotherapist/diet coach/trainer/friend/nightmare to my team. I taught them the fighter diet principles before I even knew them as fighter diet. I won their confidence and trust as I walked with them for a 6 hour hike in the middle of nowhere in Estonia. It was intense. Producers didn’t understand the amount of physical labor needed to lose 10 lbs a week for several weeks. Once the contenders were doing spinning for 8 hours NON STOP. It was cut down to 15 seconds of the show….To this day I still can’t believe these people sat on those tiny bike seats for 8 hours for television and entertainment…

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Tell us about your endeavor of being featured in “The Butt Bible” by NBC/Universal – a workout video complete with a fitness system?

Ms. Pauline Nordin: NBC wanted to make a workout DVD for the mainstream audience. They bought my creation the Butt Bible and I created a circuit training variation of it. It was so popular it outsold Jillian Michaels dvds when it launched. It was a record in downloads, I can’t remember how many, but pavel might have the info if you want. The butt bible workouts are on youtube, I have not watched it myself. People loved it for my “Pauline-ism” which was my way of almost rapping during the workouts. It was a new thing: fitness made fun. Yes, to me it MUST be done with humor. Without humor we’re dead. NBC stopped selling the DVD when the fitness section of NBC (exercise tv) didn’t stay in business which was sad because it was the season when I just got working with them and despite my DVD selling so well they had internal issues that affected the Butt Bible.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: With exceptional hard work you are credited with all your achievements. Do you believe that does the hand of Providence (Supreme Being) played a role in your success?

Ms. Pauline Nordin: Do you mean if God had a say or helped? If yes, No… I’ve done the opposite to what I was meant for. I was going to be a journalist and studied 6 languages and intercultural communication in school, but then I found fitness and it changed the course. I wanted a lean chiseled physique: that’s OPPOSITE to my genetics which want me to be chubby and not lean. I’ve always been a hard worker to reach my goals. I never make backup plans, so there’s only one way to go about it and that is to succeed.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Elaborate on your personalized concept “Fighter Diet” an ebook which you authored and presented with a gutsy FAT loss system?

Ms. Pauline Nordin: The foundation of fighter diet is based on how to prevent overeating by overeating. Here are some blogs about what it is:

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for its visitors?

Ms. Pauline Nordin: If you ONLY knew how far you can go when you truly put your passion and heart into it…. That’s true for fitness but also in life. Most people grossly underestimate their power and capacity. When someone asks me ‘why would YOU be successful?’ I say ‘Why would I NOT be?’. It’s 50-50! Someone has to win, has to accomplish, has to succeed. Not all people can be failures. BE the ones who succeed. It’s really your choice.
