305 Fitness Entrepreneur Sadie Kurzban Slays It With Dance & DJ!

Sadie Kurzban

While still in college, Sadie founded ((305)) Fitness. Meet the pint-sized 26-year old and you’ll know: she ain’t exactly a shrinking violet. From a home that was half-Jewish half-Cuban, she owes her loud mouth and sense of humor to her “Jewban” roots. Sadie is both grounded and upbeat. Come as you are. Sadie’s style of coaching is all about liberation; she will push you to your limit so you can unleash your inner beast within. While giving you plenty of motivating mantras and bursts of high-powered, full-body sprints, Sadie will also give you the room to play and be yourself (and most likely, make a friend or two). Sadie has been featured in numerous outlets including Good Morning America, the Today show, Inc, Cosmopolitan, Refinery29, the Washington Post, and the New York Observer for her unique ability to turn painful workouts into sheer bliss.

Lets get to know some health & fitness secrets from Sadie Kurzban as she catches up with Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness on the eve of International Women’s Day.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have shot to fame with your super-amazing dance-based workout classes. Introduce us to New York’s latest fitness trend, 305 Fitness.

Ms. Sadie Kurzban:

((305)) Fitness is a dance cardio workout with a live DJ. Picture it like this: you, smiling your face off, sweating like a beast, and feeling like a goofball, like you’re drunk at an awesome wedding. People are crazy about this workout because it’s so easy to follow and it’s just plain fun. Unlike a lot of dance cardio on the market, you don’t need to be a dancer to do ((305)). The beauty is in the simplicity: a live DJ gets you going and the instructor keeps you moving. You’re done in 55 minutes and you can’t believe it’s over when it’s done, because you never want to watch the clock in this class.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Walk us through the history of 305 Fitness. How did it all start?

Ms. Sadie Kurzban:

I was teaching these classes at school (I went to Brown). It was this fun part-time thing but I was crazy about it. Hundreds of kids would take these classes. It was a real *thing to do* on campus. My senior year, I was out at a nightclub with my best friend and we left, feeling all buzzed and excited. She said to me: “this! You have to do this!! This is your dying passion. Let’s take the classes you’ve created and fuse fun and fitness together with a scene that feels like a Miami nightclub.” The first thing we did that night was we went home and we googled: “how to start a business.” It’s crazy! I worked really, really hard. I entered a business plan competition and I won! I took the money, moved to New York, and bootstrapped ((305)) right after graduation in 2012.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine?

Ms. Sadie Kurzban:

((305)) is non-stop movement. It’s a lot of fitness moves “disguised” as dance. So picture: jumping jacks, high knees, running in place, lateral drills, punches, kicks…all of this blended with more fun dance moves like booty poppin and grinding.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Sadie Kurzban:

No. ((305)) is about enjoying life. Food is also about enjoying life. I truly do eat whatever I want. I try to listen to my body so if I’m stuffed, I try to stop eating before I’m over-the-limit stuffed. If I’m feeling under the weather, I’ll try to avoid dairy and I’ll go for soup. The body is the smartest machine in the world. If we are quiet and we listen to it, it will make the right choices for us.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Tell us about your haircare and skincare routine.

Ms. Sadie Kurzban:

Stop!! That is too kind! For skin, honestly, the best thing is sweat. Sweating helps regenerate new skin cells and gives me a constant pink glow. Hooray for exercise! I’m a huge fan of Skinceuticals, especially their feurolic serum and their retinol creams. I’m a proponent of sunscreen, even in the winter. For hair, Deva Curl is so, so great for those with curly or wavy hair. Their products smell amazing and leave my hair feeling so soft to the touch.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding fitness entrepreneurs who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in the field of fitness?

Ms. Sadie Kurzban:

Create a product that you like. Don’t be a copycat. Don’t do something because you think people might like it. Create a class or a workout that you would actually enjoy. That’s what I did with ((305)) and I feel that authentic joy truly defines everything we do as a brand.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your greatest influence and motivator in your success in the field of fitness?

Ms. Sadie Kurzban:

Hands down: Patricia Moreno. A living legend. She is the founder of the intenSati method and has written a tremendous book, too.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about your future plans in the fitness industry.

Ms. Sadie Kurzban:

I got into this business because I was tired of the way we were talking about women’s bodies. As a culture, we are constantly belittling women, demeaning women, telling them to take up as little space as possible, reminding them to be polite and never too angry and never too large (lest they become unattractive and therefore, useless!), and of course, encouraging them to consume more because it will make them more attractive. Even in 2016 in New York City, one of the most progressive cities in the world, you can walk into a fitness class and hear instructors talking about “8 weeks until summer” or “bikini body” or “fitting into your skinny jeans.” I was tired of that nonsense.

Working out is a sacred time for us. Working out should be about empowerment! Instead, it felt like manipulation. I wanted to fundamentally change the conversation we were having about women and their bodies when exercising. I wanted to tell the world: just move your ass! You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to be a good dancer. You don’t need to be [fill in the blank] (white, wealthy, thin, fit, look like everyone else, etc). You just need to be willing to try! My plans for ((305)) are to grow it to a size where I can reach A LOT of people. This product is so wonderful because it is of course, ridiculously effective, but most importantly, it truly empowers people outside of class, too. I want to share it on a huge scale, so I am working on growing it to new cities and soon, to the whole country and the whole world.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Your 305 clients are in love with your fitness classes. How does it feel that you are able to influence the healthy lifestyle of so many individuals?

Ms. Sadie Kurzban:

The biggest reward for me has been hearing individuals share with me their stories of confidence. Many, many people have told me how this class has shaken up their perspective entirely. They see themselves differently, not just because of the scale, but because ((305)) has awoken a passion, a zest for life, a vulnerability, a willingness to take on new challenges, a thirst for self-expression. It’s truly an amazing product and I feel so honored when I hear that it has affected so many!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What do you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for its visitors?

Ms. Sadie Kurzban:

Don’t be so hard on yourself. As women, we face a lot of pressure. We are constantly judged (by ourselves, by other women, and by the world). It’s no wonder that even the most banal, everyday things like food, exercise, and daily chitchat can become emotionally charged for us. Try to take the pressure off and when you can, find the joy in what you are doing. Your body isn’t your whole life. Your body is just one part of you. But you are much more than what you eat or how you work out: you are also your intelligence, your capabilities, your sense of humor, your spirituality, your friendships, etc etc. Take the pressure off. One meal, one workout, one bad month or bad year…it’s not the end of you. You are still you!
