An Interview with Sara Errani: Ranked World No.1 in Women Tennis Doubles

Sara Errani has won women tennis doubles Australian Open 2014, 2013, French Open 2012, US Open 2012 and was runner-up in French Open 2012 Singles and also has won numerous other awards. She was born on 29th April 1987.

Errani’s breakthrough season occurred in 2012. At the Australian Open, she reached the quarterfinals in singles and was a finalist in doubles. Known as a clay-court specialist, Errani won three titles on clay going into the 2012 French Open, where she reached the finals in both the singles and doubles tournaments, winning the doubles title with her partner Roberta Vinci. They also won the doubles title at the 2012 US Open. Her achievement in reaching the 2012 US Open singles semifinals leaves Wimbledon as the only Grand Slam tournament in which Errani has yet to make the quarterfinals.

She first got picked to represent Italy at the age of 12, in an international tournament in Auray (France). The same year, she went to the Nick Bolletieri Tennis Academy in Florida, USA, where she stayed for 10 months. She didn’t speak a word English when she arrived, and is the youngest player ever to stay there without parents. Sara said about this time: “…it was quite hard, I was crying nearly every day, but I didn’t say a word to mum and dad, because I knew my family was making an effort and I didn’t want to fail…” After this year, Sara went back to Italy and at the age of 14 she started to play in the Under 18 ITF circuit. When she was 15 years and 7 months old, she became the best Italian player Under 18, which she stayed until she turned 18.

During the 2012 season, Errani became known for producing a high first-serve percentage. Having won multiple titles on clay, she is widely recognized as a clay-court specialist, and is renowned for her use of strategy on the surface-including her tendency to position herself well, and to return serves early. Being a doubles specialist as well, she is noted for her speed around the court, and for hitting the ball with a lot of spin, as well as for her deep and loopy ground strokes.

Sara Errani is ranked World No.1 in Women Tennis Doubles. She is in an exclusive interview with Namita Nayyar President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You are ranked World No.1 in women tennis doubles. You have selected a sport where while playing doubles, it being a team sport, requires a lot of cohesiveness and rhythm between the players to finally succeed, how do you achieve that?

Sara:

Yeah you’re right…I feel very fortunate to meet Roberta Vinci and to became such good Friends…we’re almost like sisters…we share a lot of moments each other and with our teams on court and also off court, and that fact helped us a lot during our careers…

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you shall like to share?

Sara:

I do a lot of abdominal work and a lot of stretching…and also feel very comfortable with the rubber band…I use it very often especially for warming up before matches…
I’ve not a routine but just doing all the stuff I need for feeling very comfortable…

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Sara:

No I don’t have a special diet but obviously I pay a lot of attention with the food…
Breakfast i love eggs and orange juice, I eat a lot of pasta (love it ) specially during lunch…dinner I prefer rice, chicken or fish…
During the day I usually eat some fruits along with energetic drinks ( Gatorade )
It’s hard to stay away from Nutella and pizza but I try to do my best :)))

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to our inspiring and budding tennis playing girls who all are your fans, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in the field of tennis?

Sara:

For me best 2 things are having fun playing it, I can play all day long and you have to love suffering and fighting all matches…I like to stay on court and never stop fighting and never quit matches…even if it seems you cannot win there’s also a way to do it…
Plus There are a lot of ups and downs during the year and you have also to maintain balance through that…

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How did you feel before and after your memorable win of Australian Open 2013 Women doubles with Roberta Vinci?

Sara:

Well it was great!!:) We made final in 2012 and we lost so last year when we finally won was absolutely amazing…Before there was a little bit of tension but I think it’s normal…you have to cohabit with that…
After a lot of joy and pride 🙂

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

It is known that you had fought back in matches with sheer determination against all odds and returned to win. How you were able to overcome mental block when you are trailing and then reversed the final outcome of the match in your favor and what advice you wish to give to the fellow sports person in a similar situation?

Sara:

Well like I said before: never stop fighting and never stop to compete…point after point and game after game. Just think win next point…then the other one…I’m not thinking when I’m trailing oh God I have to win two sets…no…Just point after point…it’s not so simple I know :)) but this is the way…also I think you have to be good to maintain lucidity when the match is really contended… Follow your plan that you’ve made with your coach…and you have to control the game and not let the game control you..

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have won women tennis doubles French Open 2012, US Open 2012 and Australian Open 2013 and was runner-up in French Open 2012 Singles and also has won numerous other awards. How you remain so humble and lovable? Success has not made you the least arrogant and proud which is mostly with all the celebrity stars?

Sara:

Well I’m so proud of what I’ve done 🙂 but I think the key is to remain yourself…
I feel very lucky to have around me people very humble and simple like me…and I feel blessed to have realized my childhood dream…so never forgot about it…

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you contribute your reaching to the pinnacle of success in doubles to your partner Roberta Vinci, what you will like to tell us about her?

Sara:

Well it’s like a sister, she’s a fantastic woman on court and off court…she’s a little bit older than me so she helped me a lot during tournaments and all year long…

I feel very happy because it’s not easy in an individual sport to find a girl that sometimes has to play against you so lovely, generous and so helpful for me…I think we are a fantastic team 🙂

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have at the beginning of 2012 decided to change your racquet, switching from Wilson to Babolat, opting for a heavier and slightly longer model than the last, allowing for more power and better reach. It is cited that the new racquet as the reason for your improved game and entry into the top ten of the WTA rankings. In the first five months of 2012 you won three singles titles. It is said that you called this new racquet “Excalibur”, named after the sword of King Arthur. Kindly provide your side of story?

Sara:

Yes it’s all absolutely true…:) I discover the racquet in December 2011 while I was preparing 2012 season in Valencia…love at first sight…I almost immediately decide to switch from Wilson to Babolat…I’m not tall like other tennis players so to have a racquet that give me a little bit of more power without losing control it’s unbelievable..

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for its visitors?

Sara:

First of all thanx to have chosen me for this interview..:)
Just saying that practice sport is the best thing on earth…never stop to do that…the key is doing that all days…even in a short term but doing all days…it will help you a lot during all your life…and sport is a good teacher in life..:) Also Hope you will support me during all tournaments around the world..:))
