Selina Wagner

Selina Wagner is a German footballer who plays as a midfielder for SC Sand. At the time of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the German July/August issue of Playboy featured a photoshoot of Selina Wagner with teammates Annika Doppler, Ivana Rudelic, Julia Simic and Kristina Gessat.

During the 2012–2013 season, she played an important role in their winning Champions League Campaign, scoring in the second leg of the Semi-Final against Arsenal. In 2015, she moved to SC Freiburg.

Women Fitness recently caught up with the spectacular athlete and spoke to her about what it takes to be a league footballer.

Namita Nayyar:

Your journey as one of the most decorated footballers has been nothing short of spectacular. Looking back at the incredible journey that you have had, share your moments of glory & triumph?

Selina Wagner:

When I changed club at the age of 18 and went to VFL Wolfsburg, I didn’t know that this was the best decision of my life. I’ve never even thought of winning the Champions League, German League title and German Cup title twice. We’ve travelled a lot and playing the finals in London and Lisbon was awesome. I also had a great time winning the U20- World Cup in my native country. I am very happy and thankful that I’ve been able to have so many great experiences in my sport with so many special people.

Before this season, I’ve decided to leave the first league and go the next step in my career: help building up a new women’s football department in Elversberg, close to my home town and besides keep on playing also take over some management tasks.

Namita Nayyar:

What attracted you towards Football?  When did you realize that you wanted to take up the sport at a professional level?

Selina Wagner:

A lot of my family members played football, so I had to deal with it quite early and started playing when I was 3 years old. I’ve tried some other sports like handball, athletics and tennis but I’ve stuck with playing football. When I was first invited to a professional women’s football club I started to dream of playing professionally. That was when I was 16 years old.

Namita Nayyar:

Extensive energy & fitness is required for the sport you play. How do you go about maintaining your fitness level? What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine?

Selina Wagner:

Most of the fitness training needed is covered by my team training. Besides the technical and tactical training, we also work on improving athletics together. In addition to that, I also do some weight training and try to improve my fitness with mountain bike trips.

Namita Nayyar:

What diet do sportsperson need to follow? Any special diet you follow or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Selina Wagner:

Basically the most important part of nutrition is not to burn less calories than to consume. I don’t follow any strict diet but I just try to eat healthy in general. This doesn’t mean though you’re not allowed to eat chocolate or drink coke now and then, just don’t do it too often. 😉

Namita Nayyar:

Being a sportsperson, how do you manage to balance your time between family & sports?

Selina Wagner:

When I was 18, I went far away from home and was not able to see my family very often. At least for Christmas time and sometimes for birthdays I was able to go back home. But my parents were supporting me a lot in what I’ve been doing so they’ve visited a lot of my games. That was very nice. For me it was always important not to forget where I come from and that my family supported me all over the years.

Namita Nayyar:

You have earlier posed for German issue of Playboy featuring your teammates Annika Doppler, Ivana Rudelic, Julia Simic and Kristina Gessat. Share your word on body confidence & get rid of shaming? Which magazine would you like to be on the cover of, next?

Selina Wagner:

It was not so easy but it just helped me to join my friends. I just always try to be the best I can be, not everybody might always like it but it’s just important to believe in yourself – especially as a professional athlete.

As I’ve said earlier, I’ve just started the next step of my career, so the next cover I would want to be on should probably be some business magazine like Forbes. 😉

Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your greatest inspiration and motivator in your career?

Selina Wagner:

It’s hard to say, often I looked up to some of my teammates, that were very good players and an inspiration. They helped me, especially when I was injured twice with a torn ACL.

Namita Nayyar:

While playing professional sports, athletes often face injuries and other difficulties, would you like to share tips on how to cope and make a comeback after an injury?

Selina Wagner:

As I’ve said, I’ve been badly injured twice during my career. It was not easy but I’ve always tried to convince myself that I cannot change the situation and have to deal with it. I’ve tried to do that as good as possible. Positive thoughts and people that helped me made me come back stronger.

Namita Nayyar:

Women Fitness works relentlessly with a goal to reach out to women all over the world providing them with best in health, fitness, nutrition, beauty & fashion. What do you wish to say about the website (Womenfitness.net) and message for our readers?

Selina Wagner:

It’s always a good thing to get inspired by others to make your life better and healthier. I really like the mix between articles about celebrities and role models on your website on the one hand and general fitness information on the other hand.

A professional athlete has other needs for nutrition and training than a model for example so I think it’s a good thing to inspire people with a wide range of useful information from different point of views.
