Simone Biles: The Unsurpassable Gymnast all Set to win Hearts at Olymics Once Again

The most decorated gymnast in recent history, Simone Biles, is an African-American who enjoys reading history, shopping and spending time with her friends when she’s not doing what she does the best. As an Olympic Gold medalist with 14 World Championship medals (10 gold, two silver, two bronze), she is one of the Most Influential People in the World listed by TIME magazine and has numerous credits to her name.

Simone Biles, one of the most dominant athletes in the world & cover model of Women Fitness magazine (August,2018), has secured her spot on the United States Gymnastics team for the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games.

According to her ” the spot wasn’t as easy to secure as some may have expected of the reigning world and Olympic champion.” After a few mistakes during her bars routine, a fall off the beam and a step out of bounds during her floor exercise, she found herself second to Sunisa Lee in her all-around score.

Biles had hoped to end her career with more Olympic golds last summer and then retire. But when the pandemic postponed the Games until this July, Biles reluctantly decided to train for another year.

There is so much more to the world’s most celebrated gymnast than what meets the eye. To find that out, Women Fitness’ President Namita Nayyar joins Simone Biles in a fascinating interaction.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Your entrance into the world of gymnastics may have started on a daycare field trip to your hometown of Spring, Texas, but your God-gifted talent, passion, and perseverance have earned you a spot among one of the top gymnasts in the world. Tell us about your spectacular journey and how did it happen?

Ms. Simone Biles:

When I was young, I was always flipping and jumping and bouncing around. Then, while on a field trip to a gymnastics training center, one of the instructors noticed my natural ability for the sport, I was 6. After that trip my parents enrolled me in a class, and I continued to progress from there until I made it to the elite level. After 15 years of training and competing, I am still in the gym working harder than ever preparing to compete at my second Olympics.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

With four Olympic gold medals, you have set an American record for maximum gold medals in female gymnastics in a single Game. How do you feel about to become the first of a kind to write an Olympic History and to be able to inspire young girls targeting sports?

Ms. Simone Biles:

I hope my journey shows them that if you set your mind to something and work hard enough you can achieve your goals. It wasn’t easy, but with hard work, dedication and a positive attitude anything is possible in life. 

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Being a four times Olympic Gold-medalist calls for rigorous training, provide us with a glimpse of your training routine.

Ms. Simone Biles:

I train twice a day for a total of 5-7 hours Monday –Friday and then another 3-4 hours on Saturday. It’s demanding and rigorous, but I am confident that my coaches and I have found a system that best fits what my mind and body need in order for me to reach my goal of competing in 2020.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

To maintain an athletic and healthy body, you have to eat a proper diet. How do you manage your meals to get the right amount of nutrition? Also, share your favorite five cheat meals.

Ms. Simone Biles:

I try to fuel my body with the proper food and eat a  balanced diet – salmon, fish, broccoli and lots of greens. I also always keep a banana and Core Power protein shakes on hand to have after a hard workout.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

In July 2017, you won the ESPY Award for Best Female Athlete. You are the second gymnast to win this award after Nastia Liukin won it in 2009. With a long list of achievements at such a young age, you are out to make a history. How are you able to manage the pressure of balancing college and competing for artistic gymnastics?

Ms. Simone Biles:

It can be overwhelming at times, but my incredible support system and the flexibility provided by taking classes at University of the People make it all possible. University of the People allows me to work on my degree at my own pace and complete work when it’s convenient with my training schedule. My family and friends are always there to help me get through the tough days, and I work with my coaches to make sure I’m maintaining a healthy life balance, which in return allows me to give my all in the gym.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

‘Courage to Soar’ talks about your journey from an early childhood in foster care to a coveted spot on the 2016 Olympic team. Share with our viewers how in the oddest of circumstances one can rise to shine like a star?

Ms. Simone Biles:

It’s about working hard and believing in yourself. If you can do that, you can overcome any circumstance.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You were a part of the gold medal-winning team dubbed the “Final Five” at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Being a part of a team calls for a temperament where the target should be of utmost significance, how can one go about to give their best?

Ms. Simone Biles:

When we come together to compete as a team we excel to new levels. We encourage each other to be the best we can be; it gives us additional motivation knowing we are competing for each other. You no longer want to win just for yourself, you want to win as a team.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

In 2016, on Twitter you disclosed your fight against attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and permission to take medication for the same, having applied for and received a Therapeutic Use Exemption. How were you able to come to terms with it and deal with it?

Ms. Simone Biles:

It took me some time to come to terms with my diagnosis, but now I embrace it and no longer see it as a negative. I hope that by being open about my diagnosis, young people recognize that ADHD is not something that will hold them back, but instead something that makes them unique and that they can find a way to manage.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You took all of 2017 off, deciding to resume training in early 2018 and are now back in the National Team. How has the hiatus helped you in making a better, stronger and more powerful comeback? What are your future goals?

Ms. Simone Biles:

Taking the past year off was a great way for my mind and body to recover. I was able to spend quality time with my friends and family, as well as travel. By allowing myself that time to recover, I was able to return to the gym rejuvenated, focused and ready to work harder than ever. I know I have a lot of work to do but I’m excited to be back in the gym and looking forward to returning to competition this summer. That’s my focus right now, we’ll see where it goes from there.
