Women Fitness President Ms. Namita Nayyar catches up with Starr Andrews, exceptionally talented American figure skater, 2019 International Challenge Cup silver medalist and 2019 Egna Trophy silver medalist, here she talks about her workout, diet, and her journey of success.

Namita Nayyar:

You were the 19th highest ranked ladies’ singles skater in the world by the International Skating Union following the 2019-20 figure skating season.” Starting off at the young age of three you have excelled in making it your career ever since. Walk us through your spectacular journey and tell us how it all began?

Starr Andrews:

Before I was born, my mom starting skating as an adult. At three years old, my mom put me in the smallest skates available. I’ve been in love with skating ever since. I picked skating up pretty quickly and things evolved from there. When I was 9 years old, I skated to Whip My Hair by Willow Smith. That video went viral. At that time, I didn’t know what the word “viral” meant. Looking back on that video now, I think it is amazing how many people have seen it. Almost a decade later, at the 2018 U.S. Nationals Championships, I skated to Whitney Houston’s One Moment in Time. I used my vocals in the first half and the second half was sung by Whitney Houston. The program leads to a standing ovation, which left the audience captivated and immersed with emotions. Currently, I am going to continue on the progressive road of success in this sport by being a positive influencer in the areas of determination, hard work, discipline and conquering challenges greater than myself.

Namita Nayyar:

With an aspiration to become the first African American to win gold at a Winter Olympics, how do you wish to make it come true? Your strategy at the grass-root level.

Starr Andrews:

Train, consistency, rest, repeat. These are the grass-root elements to my success.

Namita Nayyar:

Introduce us to a day in your life. How do you like to kick start your day?

Starr Andrews:

My day begins with a two hour commute to the rink. I skate 3 hours on the ice which is divided into two sessions. Off-ice training is followed thereafter. It usually last one to two hours which consist of swimming, weight training, off-ice jump rotations and endurance training. Ballet, and/or dance varies throughout the week.

Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine that you may like to share? 4 keys to prevent injury and enhance performance.

Starr Andrews:

One exercise that is very important in injury prevention is stretching. Stretching can prevent future injuries because your muscles will be more flexible. Another key is making sure that I have strong ankles. This is also very important because of how much they are used. A healthy diet is one of the biggest factors in an athlete’s success. The right foods are the fuel while rest and recovery allows your body to heal from the micro tears your muscles endure while working out.

Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit? The food you stick by while traveling.

Starr Andrews:

My special diet consists of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. When traveling, I try and stick to foods that I am familiar with.

Namita Nayyar:

Having to train constantly in extreme weather conditions, how do you take care of your skin and hair?

Starr Andrews:

One thing that has definitely helped my skin is rose hip oil. I’ve always had dry skin so regular moisturizers have never really moisturized my skin enough. Rose hip oil is my special formula. I’ve always been big on keeping my hair moisturized, so I use deep conditioning hair masks and leave in conditioners.

Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your greatest influence and motivator in your success in the field of your career? Quote, you believe in.

Starr Andrews:

The greatest influence and motivator would definitely be my mom. She has been with me since I started skating and has been my rock. She pushes me to be my best and motivates me on my bad and good days. A quote she says that inspires me is, “Use what you have, to get want you want, and you’ll have what you need.”

Namita Nayyar:

In the current pandemic situation, how are you training while staying at home? A hobby you like to nurture

During this pandemic, off-ice conditioning as well as intervals training is keeping me afloat. I’ve recently gotten into painting which is very relaxing for me. I’m still a high school student, graduating this June so my high school work consumes the majority of my time.
