Namita Nayyar. President Women Fitness, had the wonderful opportunity to connect with the singer and actress, Susannah Blinkoff who spills secrets to her fitness and lifestyle in a candid interview with us.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What is the inspiration behind your music?

Ms. Susannah Blinkoff:

My new collection “Far More” is a bolder musical statement than I’ve made before. My earlier albums are more eclectic — I was playing around with a variety of styles and sounds — but this latest album is more “all-one-vibe”. My favorite place to listen to music is in the car (I live in L.A. after all!) and one of my favorite stations is called “Chill”, which is electronic, but not in a BPM kind of way, more relaxed and mellow. So I decided to do a whole collection of songs with that vibe.

I created these songs to be uplifting and positive and even somewhat spiritual, in an “Oprah-friendly” kind of way. Through my music, I’m trying to offer a hopeful message. It seems to me that with the world so chaotic and divided and filled with violence and fear, we need music more than ever to help heal us. So I wrote lyrics (or chose other people’s songs to record) with themes of acceptance, gratitude, self-love, and celebration.

Also, in terms of inspiration, I really admire artists who do their own unique thing like India Arie, Aimee Mann, and Ben Harper. People who don’t sound like other people. That’s kinda how I am…a little hard to categorize. I also just love pop music. I’m a big fan of Maroon 5, Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Coldplay and Haim. One of my favorite new artists is Billie Eilish — she’s got an amazing voice.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How do you see your music being incorporated into a woman’s healthy lifestyle?

Ms. Susannah Blinkoff:

I love the idea that I can hear a song on the radio that I’ve never heard before and in less than two minutes, I’m singing along with the chorus. That’s the kind of musical success I aspire to, I really want to make listeners sing along, and while they’re doing that, they end up affirming something positive about life. Especially as women, I think we are so bombarded by images and cultural messages that tell us we are lacking in some way — we need longer eyelashes or smoother skin to be better somehow — and I hope my music can allow someone to feel some peace for a while about wherever they are in their life. I also wrote some good grooves so the tunes are ideal to work out or stretch to.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What is the role of fitness and healthy eating in your life?

Ms. Susannah Blinkoff:

I was not at all athletic as a kid, but I grew up in New York City so I walked everywhere. I’m still a really fast walker. I moved to Los Angeles after college and that’s when I came to love fitness because there are so many opportunities to be doing stuff outside year round. I love to hike in the hills near my house with friends or with my husband and son. I’ve also done yoga for many years, but I’m still a beginner and I’m not always regular about going. I do Pilates once or twice a week, it makes my body feel so good. And I get on the treadmill about once a week and do sprint intervals to get my heart rate up.

Eating-wise, my family and I are “foodies” meaning we love to go out in L.A. and explore different cuisines, trying all different kinds of food. When we travel, we choose places that have food we want to try. My husband is also an excellent cook, so I eat very well. My tastes are pretty healthy — kale really is my favorite vegetable (massage it raw with olive oil, lemon & salt!) and I’ll choose dark chocolate over a Twinkie — but I’d probably feel a little better if I didn’t eat croissants and cookies and pizza as much as I do. I just really love them and life feels too short to cut out food that gives me such simple pleasure! So I’m always working on moderation in my diet, rather than deprivation.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What is your favorite kind of workout?

Ms. Susannah Blinkoff:

Besides putting on dance music and dancing around my living room by myself, my passion is tennis. I learned to play in my ’40’s and I absolutely love it (doubles especially) because it’s competitive, fast, and takes a lot of concentration and stamina. I joined a women’s USTA team this past fall and we practice a few times a week. It’s fantastic to find an exercise that I love to do. It doesn’t feel like working out at all.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What track(s) on your new album set’s the stage for a great workout?

Ms. Susannah Blinkoff:

Some people have said my music is “soothing”, while others have said the grooves make them want listen to it while doing Pilates or Kundalini yoga. So I guess it’s relaxing & energizing at the same time, which is cool. The funkiest track is the cover of Rare Earth’s 1973 hit song “I Just Want to Celebrate”. The other two that are slower grooves but would be good for workouts are “Far More” and “I Am Here”. I also have a DJ friend working on remixing those songs right now, so there will definitely be faster-tempo versions coming soon.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How do you find time in your busy schedule as an actress, writer, musician, and mom to maintain a healthy lifestyle?

Ms. Susannah Blinkoff:

I need exercise for my mental well-being, truthfully, it really helps my mood. If I stop exercising, I’ll get kind of depressed. So I try to put workouts on my calendar so I have to do them. If I say to myself that I’ll work out “later”, it’s probably not going to happen. I do better with partners or friends who I’ll make a date to hike or play tennis with — because if someone’s waiting for me to show up, I’ll be there.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What message do you want women to take from your new album?

Ms. Susannah Blinkoff:

I believe that each of us is a unique, one-of-a-kind spiritual being having a human experience and we are much more amazing and powerful and capable than we can ever imagine. Every day is a gift — and practicing gratitude really does improve life. And music has deep, healing powers — so try to sing and dance and enjoy music every day, because it’s good for the soul. If it’s my music you listen to, that’s great…but really, anything that moves your heart is perfect.
