As a fitness model and student of acupuncture, beauty and brains doesn’t come close to describing what Syleena is all about. She is winner of category Physique Class A at 2014 NPC San Diego Championships (National Physique Committee of the USA).

Syleena Adams an exceptionally beautiful Fitness Model and winner of 2014 NPC San Diego Championships. She is in conversation with Namita Nayyar President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You are a fitness model and a student of acupuncture. What a combination of beauty with brains. Tell us about your journey that took you to the the world of fitness and as a winner in physique professional competitions?

Ms. Syleena Adams:

I’ve always been super athletic but my love for the gym started when I was 16 and was offered a job for a fitness instructor when I turned 18. I turned 18 contacted the group x area manager and they sent to get a bunch of certificates and I started teaching at multiple gyms including my university. As I was teaching I got into playing capoeira and soon ruptured my Achilles and had surgery the next day. I knew from there that my athletic ability wasn’t completely impaired but it wasn’t going to be the same either. So I needed another way to stay in shape and focusing on my diet more was where I decided to go. I talked to a coach to learn more about diet and nutrition, decided to hire him and before I knew it I was prepping for my first show and the rest is history!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How your experience and background of many years as in bodybuilding has helped you in your present profession of being a Fitness Model and physique professional competitor?

Ms. Syleena Adams:

Experience is practice. Practice is years. Everyday is something new. Over the years I’ve learned so much to bring me to this point. From high school women’s weight classes where my teacher broke down every exercise and how to do it, to getting certified and learning how to motivate 60-70 people in a group x class. These are all the baby steps, the foundation to my success.

Never quitting even when I felt like I was at the bottom proved to myself how much desire I have. I have to thank all the people who have coached me and spent time with me discussing every aspect of bodybuilding. I so blessed to have the people I do along my journey. Ive never been discouraged or belittled in any way, everyone has always been supportive and positive. I have good people in my life who genuinely care and who have helped me.

I’m so thankful for that because it makes a worlds of difference in how I keep moving forward from these positive experiences. I couldn’t even begin to tell you how many road trips and time watching youtube videos of iconic fitness motivators I have experienced; I gathered something from every event. My first photoshoot was in 2012, I wasn’t nervous at all. I just remember not knowing my angles for the camera. Lol at this point ive shot with so many photographers that its easy for me to let my personality show through the lens. each photographer has their own style.

After a few minutes of feeling the vibe I go with it and try to make everyone laugh and have a good time. There are still some photographer I would love to shoot with! I’m a firm believer in, people may not remember what you said to them but they will always remember how you made them feel! I’m still a baby in the sport and in life. At 24, I could only imagine all the things I still need to figure out and all that I have ahead of me.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Share your exercise routine that you do to maintain such a bikini perfect physique?

Ms. Syleena Adams:

My exercise routine has changed over the years as well as the way I train. As my body progresses and changes so does my training to bring up my weaknesses and maintain my strengths always chasing that perfect balance. As of now my routine is as follows:

Cardio I do 5-6 times a week 30 min sessions of weighted lunges to keep my legs tight and toned. I love cardio and its so good for overall health.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What is your diet? Do you take a particular fixed regulated diet comprising of nutrients and vitamins to keep you in perfect health?

Ms. Syleena Adams:

My diet is pretty typical of most bodybuilders. I will say I’ve had a few coaches and my body has felt the best on the diet I have created for myself. I have incorporated alternative eastern medicine and new research to help keep my body balanced of my need. Everyone is different and a diet should be specific to your bodies’ needs.

For example, I have eczema and I haven’t had it since I was 9 years. Just the last two years it started up again. I’ve asked my professors and read a ton of new studies of recent causes of eczema.

What I found was that a lot of skin diseases are a result of an imbalance of omega 3 and 6 ratio. What I did to my diet was add about 50 grams of healthy omega 3/6 balanced fats. I will list my diet below. The results, my skin cleared up in weeks and another result shocked me. I was at a plateau with my weight after adding the fat I lost 2 lbs within weeks after being stuck at a weight for months. For me diet is the most important and food heals and is different for everybody!

My diet is as follows

  1. coffee with a scoop of protein, 3 egg whites 1 whole egg omelet with mushrooms tomatoes, two pieces of cinnamon ezekiel bread with 1/2 an avocado as a spread)
  2. protein pancake: 2 egg whites, 1/4 cup oatmeal, 1 scoop protein powder and 1 banana.
  3. chicken, broccoli and rice with 1 tbsp udo’s oil and red wine vinegar
  4. same as above-I switch my protein, carbs and green veggies week to week depending on what I’m craving.
  5. 4 egg white omelette with mushrooms and pico de gallo and seasonings
  6. a scoop of protein before bed and maybe some nut butter or nuts depending on how I feel
As far as supplements and vitamins, my go to must have on hand is a multivitamin, vit-C, probiotics and digestive enzymes. Of course I do protein powder and sometimes CLA,
L-Carnitine, BCAAs that sorts of things.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What is your motivation to take a multi-faceted personality of a fitness model, physique professional competitor, personal trainer and nutritional expert?

Ms. Syleena Adams:

It’s not so much my motivation but the heart and passion I have for what I do! I’m motivated to make a change in peoples lives and spread the knowledge and information of a healthy lifestyle for them and their family. I’m almost done with my doctorate in TCM, traditional Chinese medicine, for acupuncture and alternative medicine. So its my life, my world to be healthy and share the feeling of what its like to feel good!!!

I feel energized and happy, always wanting to dance around and smile and that comes from within, being healthy inside and out. That means eating the right food. How many times have you eaten something, pizza or fast-food or even doughnuts and felt heavy, sluggish or crashed from it? Why would I or anyone else want to feel that way? Yes, sugars and carbs act like drugs to the brain which is why I and I’m sure many others have had withdrawal symptoms. I had headaches, sever fatigue and cravings when I first started changing my diet and I took a good 6 months before I started to feel normal on the kind of diet I’m on now. But I hardly ever crave cheat meals and I feel amazing, better than ever before. That is my motivation of a multi-faceted personality and I have fun. I love the camera, I love being on stage and I love seeing what I can do next or better!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hair to make them look so stunning?

Ms. Syleena Adams:

Hahaha well thank you so much for the compliments! So I’ll be honest I’m a bit of a beauty queen at heart. Not the way you would think of as wearing make up all time and what not. I have a routine I do every night, quite simple but I’ve done it since I was a young girl. So I’m not big into a lot of special products, I’m the type where the simpler the better.

I use coconut oil every night before bed so yes I’m a greasy ball but coconut oil soaks in faster and better than other oils. Secondly I use coconut oil for a mouthwash as well. Kind of odd to some but its called oil pulling if you’re not familiar with it. Lastly, I do put coconut oil in my hair overnight once a week as well. As far as a face wash, scrub and moisturizer I’m picky due to my eczema and sensitive skin. I use dove to wash, baking soda as a scrub and eucerin cream for moisturizing. I don’t put coconut oil on my face because I tend to break out more.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Fitness modelling is about bold photo shoots. What advice you wish to give to the women of today to be body confident in order to do such bold modeling?

Ms. Syleena Adams:

Everyone has some kind of body confident issue, if you don’t you’re simply not human. Perfection is not humanity. Why must I say that? What is perfect? What is right? What is wrong? It’s the unknown, and you cant fear the unknown, you cant define it and why does it matter?. At a point, it became not so much confidence I grew but appreciation for what I’ve worked for and the sweat, time, dedication and even talking to myself at times to build my figure.

Happiness is confidence, it comes down to, be happy with who you are and what you’ve done. Nobody knows your story, your past, what you’ve overcome. For all you know the person who placed last at your show could have lost 50 or 70 lbs and achieved a goal they never imagined! That’s beauty and confidence. I say go for it and give it your all, it doesn’t matter what anyone thinks as long as you’re having fun. So my advice would be to smile and enjoy it, why waste the energy on pensiveness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding physique professional competitor girls who all are your fans and shall like to know from you for their climb to ladder of success in field of physique professional competitions?

Ms. Syleena Adams:

Motivation, when I think of that, fire is what comes to my mind. But its deeper than that, its not just about the flame coming up and awing everyones eyes. Its about what’s underneath. It’s the coals that hold more heat and intensity then the flame itself. For me to tell you how to keep those coals burning is out of my control, for me as I stated before, it’s the feeling I get. That high, that zone, that ability to go in and out of that state of being and say hi and have small talk at the gym and then get right back in it. At that time, I’m peaceful, I don’t have rambling thoughts crossing my mind or lists of things I need to do floating like a cloud. It’s definitely my get away and I do it everyday!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us how you felt before and after standing first at 2014 NPC San Diego Championships (National Physique Committee of the USA)?

Ms. Syleena Adams:

My last show was somewhat chaotic. I did not plan everything very well and was too relaxed and chill. I got up early but I took my time going to the convention and getting my tan and makeup done. My parents came to the show to support me and crazy enough they were down at the convention center before I was. I was still in their hotel room with my makeup artist. They called me as I was about leaving, which was just down the road, and told me they were calling my name to get ready to hop on stage! I was like what?!

So I got dropped off at the front and ran to the stage. I had minutes to get glazed, pin my number on and pump up and before I knew it I was putting on a show. Considering all that I did well and I had a blast! So the night show was a bit different, I was there on time but now as I’m backstage in order to do our performance the tech guys were like we don’t have your music. Oh no, not another thing… so as the other girls in front of me are doing their performance I’m trying to email them the song which the final version wasn’t in my email. It was in my friends email who edited and mixed the song a bit more.

They finally received it literally within seconds of stepping on stage. They turned the sound up and was like oh its playing, your turn go on. I didn’t have a 1 2 3 or anything. I went on and started off where the music was and got into it and performed what I had been practicing. I made the most of it and I couldn’t stop smiling. Considering all that happened, I wasn’t upset or nervous, I was chill and happy to be there. Happy I completed it and performed what I wanted to and stepped on stage. Afterwards I was so stoked. I just was happy. I set a goal, worked for it and achieved it. I before and after stepping on stage. We were all so supportive of each other and there wasn’t any kind of competitive feeling against us. It was all genuine and good times.

When I initially got my name called for first and overall I was somewhat blank. Is this real? Did this just happen? After it sunk in I just wanted to celebrate and take pictures. Since this was a local show, the entire family at the gym pretty much was there. We have a great group here in san diego, it was good to see everyone and here their cheers and support in the audience. my next show is going to be a national show. I am going to be doing an all exclusive 8-10 out all access as to how my trainings are going, my diet, my energy, everything. I will be videoing posing, workouts, cooking.

This isn’t the first time someone has done this but it’s the first time I will be doing this. You can find out more about it through my IG: syleenaa and where to find it and when I post youtube videos.
