In An Interview With Taylor Dayne: Pop Icon, Freestyle Music Singer-Songwriter & Actress

Leslie Wunderman better known by her recording and stage names Les Lee and Taylor Dayne, is an American pop and freestyle music singer-songwriter and actress. In late 1987, she scored her first major hit when her debut single “Tell It to My Heart” reached No. 7 on the Hot 100. She then went on to have a string of hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including the No. 1 Billboard hit “Love Will Lead You Back”. Overall, she has had eighteen individual hit songs reach the top ten in Billboard magazine. These include most recently, the 2011 American and international hit “Floor on Fire” and the 2008 song “Beautiful”, which reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. She has also topped the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart three times.

From platinum pop songs to chart-topping dance hits, Taylor Dayne is one of the most popular vocalists of the modern age. She has enjoyed Top 10 hits in three consequent decades, selling a combined 75 million singles and albums along the way. Originally signed by music mogul Clive Davis in the 1980s, Dayne has become a true crossover artist, someone whose popularity spans multiple generations and many different music formats.

With the release of her first two albums, 1988’s Tell It to My Heart and 1989’s Can’t Fight Fate, Dayne racked up three number 1 singles: “Tell It to My Heart,” “Love Will Lead You Back” and “Prove Your Love to Me.” Her Grammy-nominated songs could be heard across the radio dial, from Top 40 pop stations to adult contemporary channels. Meanwhile, Dayne sang in front of audiences across the world, even joining Michael Jackson for the European leg of his sold-out “Bad” tour.

As the ’80s gave way to the ’90s, she began establishing herself as a film, television and stage actress, too, appearing alongside Warren Beatty in the movie “Love Affair,” starring in Elton John’s Broadway award-winning production of Aida, and playing Grizzabella in the 2013 Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival’s production of “CATS.” She also gained notice not only for her singing ability, but her songwriting skills, as well. Several of Dayne’s gold and platinum-selling solo albums featured her own compositions, and “Whatever You Want,” a song she co-wrote for Tina Turner, became a Top 40 hit in 10 different countries in 1996.

After taking a break from music to raise her two children, Dayne made a highly publicized return with her 2008 release, Satisfied. She co-wrote the album’s lead single, “Beautiful,” which climbed to number 1 on the dance charts. It was her 17th time cracking the Top 10 on the Billboard charts. Two years later, Dayne performed the official theme song of the 2010 Gay Games, “Facing a Miracle.” She followed that song’s release with her 18th Top 10 hit, “Floor on Fire,” and continued making appearances on film and TV. Fans of “American Idol” even chose her as the top candidate to replace former judge Paula Abdul in a poll conducted by Rolling Stone, proof that Dayne was still a household name.

More than 25 years after the release of her single, Taylor Dayne continues to tour the world. She was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame in 2012, joining other time-tested luminaries like Billy Joel and Joan Jett.

Taylor Dayne is Pop Icon and an exceptionally talented freestyle music singer-songwriter and actress. Over the years she has had eighteen individual hit songs that reached the top ten in Billboard magazine. She has achieved a combined sales of more than 75 million singles and albums. She is in conversation with Namita Nayyar President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You began singing professionally after graduating from high school in Baldwin, Nassau County, New York, singing in rock bands such as Felony and Next. Signed to Arista Records, your first song to crack the top ten was the dance-pop hit “Tell It to My Heart” in late 1987. The song was an instant smash worldwide, peaking in the top five of most major markets worldwide, and achieving a peak of number one in many countries, including West Germany. You are one of the most popular vocalists of the modern age. You have enjoyed Top 10 hits in three subsequent decades, selling a combined 75 million singles and albums till now. You are a true crossover artist, someone whose popularity spans multiple generations and many different music formats. What factors you consider are responsible for your such a spectacular success ?

Ms. Taylor Dayne:

Firstly, Thank you. I was a very hungry, determined artist, I can’t tell you how the success happened in terms of all the people, radio, records and fans over the years. There are too many moments and people to name. But I will tell you hard work, and perseverance will always be number# 1 in determining someones success.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have also gained notice for your songwriting skills. Several of your gold and platinum-selling solo albums featured your own compositions, and “Whatever You Want,” a song you co-wrote for Tina Turner, became a Top 40 hit in 10 different countries in 1996. This propelled your singing career to the height where you have been at the top of the world as a singer and songwriter. Tell us something about your professional journey in the world of music?

Ms. Taylor Dayne:

I was not happy just singing, by my 3rd studio record, I had been on the pop train for 8 years and I was ready to say something personal about myself I needed to do it, I needed to express my experiences to my audience, and get it out. Songwriting was that tool. It was not very well embraced by my record company that I be a part of this process and the songs and I paid dearly for it. Literally and figuratively. But any artist will tell you that it made me work twice as hard the challenge to myself to deliver to the fans and the company expectations.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How did you react when your returned with 2008 release “Satisfied” that you co-wrote for the album’s lead single, “Beautiful,” which climbed to number 1 on the dance charts. It was also your 17th time cracking the Top 10 on the Billboard charts?

Ms. Taylor Dayne:

It was very validating and nice to have that success on a song you were part of the process making.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

As an actress, you are known for “Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!” (2004), “Flawless” (1999) and “Fried Green Tomatoes” (1991). Tell us your experience of working as an actress?

Ms. Taylor Dayne:

Actually all those films I was part of the soundtracks. I acted in other films and TV series, I love the collaborative process on sets and again the challenge I’m a great singer, a good actress so I have to work harder there as it’s not a muscle I use as often.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You are a gay rights activist for many years and is considered a gay icon in the gay community. You have performed at the 19th Annual Long Beach Gay Pride Festival (May 2002), you also performed the official theme song of the 2010 Gay Games, “Facing a Miracle”. Tell us more about this passion of yours?

Ms. Taylor Dayne:

My LGBT fan base I have watched over 25 years grow and grow strong. They have evolved and grown in communities, cities and countries. They are truly my most loyal fans.

Ms. Taylor Dayne:

It sounds so big, But really I get up everyday and look over my calendar and plan my day, my shows, my events, my career. Now more then ever I try and enjoy conversations and meeting people more fully. Giving more of myself when I perform and knowing that it is good when I perform live, in that 90 min energy is moving around that room that I can shape and shift and move. Its very special for me and the audience. Very powerful.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us your views about taking hormones, anti aging medication and lifestyle changes, on being a single mother and about fertility in view of raising children through surrogacy?

Ms. Taylor Dayne:

I have many many thoughts on these topics. I am personally on hormone therapy and have had fertility and used a surrogate, I personally have found incredible gifts in all of the above. My 13 year old twins, the ability to have them even then as a single mother. The last 3 -4 years the great changes and body transformations I’ve had because of being on HRT therapies. I’ve feel very blessed.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit. Specially with regard to your throat?

Ms. Taylor Dayne:

My No.# 1 remedy for maintaining my voice is SLEEP. Without it I’m nothing, all my friends, family and kids know, I have to shut it down. It’s my quiet time to build back up, my voice, my spirit and my body.
