Whitney Miller: Miss United States 2012 & MMA Fighter Reveals Her Workout, Diet & Beauty Secrets

Whitney MillerWhitney Miller became Miss United States after being crowned Miss Texas. Not only was Whitney awarded the title of Miss Texas United States 2012, and subsequently Miss United States 2012, but she is also a professional wake surfer for a global company.

While competing in the Miss Texas US pageant, Whitney won the award for Best in Swimsuit. Due to her discipline and hard work she also works as a fitness model and an on-air television host. In her first BJJ tournament, she medaled gold fighting without a gi, and came in second in one. A gi is whole different type of formal wear.

Whitney Miller is an exceptionally talented and accomplished Miss United States 2012 and a MMA Fighter. She in conversation with Namita Nayyar President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You after being crowned Miss United States 2012 propelled your professional career to a greater height. Tell us something about this fairy tale journey?

Ms. Whitney Miller: It was nothing short of a fairy tale! The Miss United States title would have never been mine if I didn’t decide to spontaneously compete in the Miss Texas US pageant, with only one week to prepare! Most contestants spend months, years, if not a good portion of their lives in pageantry, vying for a national title so as you can imagine I was a bit shocked to see that beautiful crown on my head. Since that moment, more doors have opened up for me than I ever thought possible. I’ve been able to travel worldwide, meet incredibly talented and interested people, work in radio and television and inspire people just by telling my story! Every time I look back at how my journey played out I am humbled and beyond blessed to have had a year as Miss Texas US and Miss United States!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You must be the only person in the world who being a winner of a beauty pageant and then went on to make a career as a MMA Fighter. Tell us your motivation and reason for such change into a different career?

Ms. Whitney Miller: I am the type of person that is constantly searching for a challenge. I honestly believe when we challenge ourselves, we learn about ourselves. MMA and BJJ is nothing short of a challenge. It takes me passed what I thought possible, not only on the physical level but also on the emotional and mental level. Trust me, there are days I never want to step back on the mat but pushing through those barriers have showed me that nothing can or will hold me back. Many lessons learned in the gym carry over into everyday life and I can say without a doubt that beginning martial arts has made me a better person!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You are leading media personality, winner of beauty pageant, fashion model, style icon, spokesperson, television star and a MMA fighter. How do you manage such a remarkable multi-dimensional lifestyle?

Ms. Whitney Miller: First of all its something I enjoy doing which makes things easier. I enjoy being on the go and dipping my toes into every experience life has to offer. However, alone time is a definite recharge station. Anytime things get a bit overwhelming, I take a few minutes to be completely by myself to either sit, write, run; anything to clear the mind. This allows me to get back in the madness with a smile on my face and truly feel the excitement! To keep up with me on social media follow @Miss2Jits on twitter, and instagram.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: In your first BJJ tournament you won the Gold Medal, and won Silver in the second one. Elaborate on this experience of yours?

Ms. Whitney Miller: Even looking back brings a smile to my face and a bubbling of excitement because I never would have thought that I would be fighting in a combative sport. I was nervous as hell. The last time I competed in anything was on the Miss United States stage and obviously walking in high heels is different than another girl trying to choke me until I have no option other than to tap or pass out. I remember taking deep breaths before the referee queued the fight to begin. We went back and forth trying to take each other down but eventually I landed in the top, dominant, position. I had taken a beating in months of training for this exact scenario, she turned, I took her back and finished a rear naked choke. I honestly almost started crying but held it together! I was proud of myself for pushing through all of the challenges all the while keeping my emotions together to win the fight. The best part of this whole journey is (1) I know I can defend myself in any situation which is key for women today and (2) I have inspired so many people to get out and try something like this for themselves! Ms. Namita Nayyar: What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you may wish to share?

Ms. Whitney Miller: I focus on functional fitness and unconventional training methods like using kettlebells, maces, battle ropes and steel clubs to name a few of my favorite fitness equipment. I am actually in the process of filming the first ever female functional fitness Mace DVD, which once finished can be found at www.Onnit.com.

Recently, my training has changed a bit because I am playing with the idea of competing in my first fitness show! I will need to incorporate a form of gymnastics and increasing weight loads to put on about 5-8 pounds of muscle!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Whitney Miller: 3 words: Earth grown nutrients! If it comes from the earth and is touched by the sun, I eat it. Personally, I don’t believe in strict diets unless you are training for something very specific, and even then, your “diet” should consist of nothing but earth grown nutrients and certain all natural supplements. The only supplements I use are from Onnit. They are all natural and actually work!!

I like to keep it easy!! Earth grown nutrients is a simple way to live an extremely healthy lifestyle which in turn optimizes you mentally and physically! This means, if it comes in a bag, its a no go. I would like to touch on a few basic principles that need to be brought to light for others looking to optimize their life.

1: Fat is good. Yes, that horrible, no good word, is actually not so bad afterall! Believe it or not, “good fats” like you can find in olive and coconut oils, nuts and avocados aid in absorption of vital nutrients, provide optimal brain function and helps give you that flat stomach we are all working for!! Fat is your friend!!

2: Stop the calorie counting! I am beyond guilty of doing this while competing in pageants. You would find me eating all kinds of low calorie foods, like 100 calorie packs which are packed with unhealthy, chemically based ingredients. This is the last thing our bodies want to consume. Instead of counting calories we need to start focusing on making the calories count. For example, eating 500 calories of processed foods will have a dramatically different effect on your body than eating 500 calories of earth grown nutrients like
fruits, veggies and healthy fats!

3: Consume organic, grass fed meats and pasture raised chicken and eggs. Conventionally raised animals are pumped with antibiotics, and hormones which is very detrimental to the body. Eat animals that eat real food!

4: Start using Himalayan Sea Salt as opposed to conventional table salt. Table salt only has 3 minerals and the 3rd one, Iodine, is usually synthetic. Himalayan Sea Salt has 65 minerals and is beneficial for sleep, libido, Ph balance, hydration….the list can go on for days!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hair to make them look so stunning?

Ms. Whitney Miller: Wow, thank you! I’m in love with Ronda Allison Skin Care. These amazing products paired with customized facials every 8 weeks have given my skin a new glow and I couldn’t be happier with the results! My advice would be to first find a facialist that can give you honest advice about your skin. I went through about 5 or 6 different facialist until I found my savior! It may take time, but its beyond beneficial! As far as hair care, Kevin Murphy products are at the top of my list. I use just about product they have including a deep conditioner. That being said, I also love home remedies for shiny, soft hair. Coconut oil and avocados can do wonders!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Tell us more about your rigorous training at Tiger Muay Thai & MMA Training Camp, Phuket, Thailand ?

Ms. Whitney Miller: Rigorous is an understatement! I had never been more challenged, pushed, and bruised in my life but I was honestly having the time of my life. Not only was I the only amatueur fighter in the group but also I was the only female! The day would begin with an early morning two hour session of Jiu Jitsu, followed by a scooter ride out to the nearest beach, then to a rough two hour session of wrestling followed by Muay Thai or MMA technique! Needless to say, I was exhausted and a bit beat up by the days end. I dove head first into training like a professional fighter and followed that routine for one month. I quickly learned that rest and recovery was a very important aspect to any training program. However, I still have to force myself to take recovery time but once I do my body basks in the time to repair!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding beauty pageant aspirant girls who all are your fans and shall like to know from you for their climb to ladder of success in the field of competing in a beauty pageant?

Ms. Whitney Miller: You hear this all the time, but I can’t stress anything more than going into competition as yourself and only yourself. Fear is something that holds most contestants back from doing this because of what we are told!

Don’t let fear hold you back!

I’ve been there and I understand that it’s difficult to avoid getting caught up in what everyone else says you should do, be, say etc. Judges can see through inauthenticity. Yes, its important to have a coach help you with compiling important aspects of yourself for your bio sheets, teaching proper stage presence, confidence in interview and walking technique but this should only aid in bringing out your best self! I have personally built an all inclusive pageant program for this exact reason. The program is called Reign and Shine which includes my top pageant tips, products I can’t live without, a full nutrition and fitness regimen, and private coaching all the while staying your beautiful authentic self and walking away with a title!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have done bold photo shoots. How you are so body confident and advice to your compatriots?

Ms. Whitney Miller: To be honest, I haven’t always been this way. I grew up with a very athletic build that I was told constantly was unfeminine. Even early on, while beginning my pageant career numerous unqualified coaches would encourage me to make my body softer, less athletic, and all in all smaller. Hearing this took me down a path that wasnt very healthy at all and there were times I wished for nothing more than a different body. But now with a hindsight view, I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to live in this body!

When we take care of our bodies and fuel ourselves with the proper nutrition we love the experience of having a healthy vibrant body! This is truly something that took the insecurities away and have allowed me to feel beautiful in front of any camera. Beauty isn’t a strangers personal opinion, beauty is how you feel!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for its visitors?

Ms. Whitney Miller: This is the year to start living the life you have always dreamed of! Follow that little voice inside your heart because once you do your life will fill with abundance and everyone around you will be able to bask in your light! I am beginning a new project this year which I’m super excited about. 2015 will house my first womens retreat focusing on bringing together the physical side of ourselves and the mental, emotional side and allowing them to work in harmony with each other! We will play, dance, eat, cook, inspire and surround ourselves with like minded individuals 🙂 Will be a hell of a ride!
