Women’s Day Special: How Corey Phelps Overcame Hypothyroid With Health & Fitness

The American Thyroid Association reported that in the United Status postpartum thyroiditis occurs in approximately 5-10% of women.

Corey Phelps, who had gained 25 lbs in her first pregnancy, lost most of her hormonal weight gain shortly after having her daughter. Always having lived a fit and healthy lifestyle, Corey was shocked when just 9 months postpartum she gained 30lbs in a month!! Corey visited multiple Doctors, she tried everything from conventional medicine to eastern medicine. It wasn’t until seeing an acupuncturist, that they recommended she may be working out too much and therefore increasing the stress on her body. TOO MUCH? Corey was in shock. She was used to spending hours in the gym to try and shed this unwanted weight. Corey became afraid of going to the gym, scared it would add to her Hypothyroidism. She decided to shift things around and find a good balance between her fitness regimen and personal health.

Women Fitness is #CelebratingWomen this International Women’s Day, with a new story of an inspirational woman going out every day. Lets check out the next one about this strong mom, Corey Phelps, who overcame her hypothyroid diagnosis post pregnancy with the help of health and fitness.

Women Fitness:

How did you react when you were first diagnosed with Hypothyroidism?

Corey Phelps:

I was relieved to finally have an answer to my unexplained fatigue and weight gain. I began educating myself, first on thyroid function and how to support it, and then on thyroid dysfunction and disorder. I wanted to understand the condition and arm myself with as much information as possible so I could get to the the root cause.

Women Fitness:

How were you able to overcome it?

Corey Phelps:

It was a long road of trial and error. I did a ton of research. I dialed in my nutrition. I changed my approach to exercise, and most importantly I learned to connect and listen to my body.

Women Fitness:

What role did nutrition play in this? What was your diet like?

Corey Phelps:

Nutrition played a huge role in my healing body and managing thyroid function. I removed dairy and gluten from my diet as well as all processed foods. My diet now consists of only high quality organic veggies, fruits, proteins, complex carbohydrates and fats. I traded my morning coffee for green tea and bone broth. I also began supplementing with probiotic rich foods like kombucha and fermented veggies as well as foods rich in Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA). ALA is type of omega 3 that play a huge role in balancing hormones and supporting thyroid function.
