2017 World Champion Emma Coburn Talks About Her Ecstatic Win & What Went Behind It

World Champion Emma Coburn

Emma Coburn is an American middle distance runner who specializes in the 3000 meter steeplechase. She became the World Champion in London 2017 on steeplechase 3000 metres in a time of 9.02.59, breaking her own American record. This made her the first American woman to win a gold medal in the steeplechase at either the World Championships or the Olympics. Previously she set an American record of 9:07.63 in the 3000 meter steeplechase to win a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games. This also made her the first American woman to win any Olympic medal in that event. Her other achievements in the event include reaching the 2012 Olympic final (8th), and the World Championship finals in 2011 (10th) and 2015 (5th). She also won the 2014 IAAF Continental Cup. She is a 6-time (2011, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17) United States National Champion.

World Champion Emma Coburn shares her spectacular journey towards the Gold medal, in this exclusive interview with Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You were born in a small town in Colorado and climbed your first “Fourtneener” when you were only 7 years old. You reached the pinnacle of success by becoming 4 Times U.S. Champion, American Record Holder in 3000 Steeplechase and 2012 Olympian for Steeplechase. Tell us about this incredible journey and how it all began?

Ms. Emma Coburn:

I grew up in a small mountain town where everyone is adventurous and active. My family loved to hike, mountain bike, and ski and I was just trying to keep up with them. I participated in as many school sports as I could because my older siblings did too. I think growing up really active and participating in lots of different sports helped develop some of the athleticism and coordination required for the steeplechase.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your greatest influence and motivator in your success in the field of Steeplechase?

Ms. Emma Coburn:

Jenny Simpson was the former American record holder in the steeplechase and we were teammates in college. I’m a few years younger than her and seeing her competing on the world stage was definitely motivating and inspiring.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Share with us your workout routine?

Ms. Emma Coburn:

I run 9 times a week, 80-85 miles a week, and am in the weight room 3 times a week. My running is a mix of easy runs, fast long runs, and shorter track workouts. My gym sessions are full body workouts with exercises like lunges, squats, and planks.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Emma Coburn:

I eat a balanced, healthy diet. My plate is usually 1/2 carbs, 1/4 protein and 1/4 veggies. Everything in moderation. I have a sweet tooth so love to have some sweets but try and keep that to a minimum in the weeks leading up to a competition.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How does it feel to be the American Record Holder for 3000 Steeplechase?

Ms. Emma Coburn:

Along with immense gratitude, does it also bring upon some added pressure to perform even more better? I am always wanting to improve and find the best in myself. The American Record doesn’t change my motivation, I’m always trying to get better!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You are a 4x US Steeplechase Champion, 2x NCAA Steeplechase Champion, 2015 USA Outdoor Track and Field Champion and so much more. Tell us about the one most memorable moment that you’ve had across all these Championships?

Ms. Emma Coburn:

Winning bronze in Rio and winning Gold in the World Championships are both sweet memories!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Share with us your experience of appearing on the ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue?

Ms. Emma Coburn:

It was snowing when we shot it. Some people think the snow was photoshopped, but no! it was snowing and I was running barefoot and naked through the snow. The snow and being cold was a good distraction, I wasn’t thinking about the fact that I was naked! The crew on set was super professional and the photographer, Marcus Eriksson, made me feel totally comfortable.
