Asdis Hjalmsdottir is an exceptionally talented Icelandic javelin thrower. She also excels in 60m, Shot Put and Discus Throw. She has won Gold four times at the Games of the Small States of Europe in the javelin throw. She is in conversation with Namita Nayyar President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You were born in Reykjavik, Iceland and must have started taking part in sports at a very young age. You won four times gold medal in the Games of the Small States of Europe 2005, 2009, 2013 & 2015 in Javelin throw and once in Discus throw. What factors do you consider were responsible that made you achieve that?

Ms. Asdis Hjalmsdottir:

I actually started kind of late with sports. Before turning to athletics I played badminton from age 10 to 16 when I started training seriously for javelin throw. The main factor for my success is my passion for my sport. Already at age 10 when I had just started training for badminton I told my dad that I was going to compete at the Olympics one day. I absolutely love what I do so I am very motivated to do what I need to do to succeed.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about your training in the sport of your specialization that helped you in your achievements in the world of javelin throw?

Ms. Asdis Hjalmsdottir:

As a javelin thrower you need a very good all round fitness since this event is very hard on the body. It takes a lot of training and I am sure that my background in many different sports as a kid helped me considerably when I decided to specialize in javelin throw.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you shall like to share?

Ms. Asdis Hjalmsdottir:

My training regimen consists of all round training. The basics are technical training, sprinting, weight lifting, jumps and heavy ball throws but it is very important to have a strong core and good coordination so I also do pilates, yoga and even zumba.

I start every training session with a very good warm-up and mobility work which I think is very important for your range of motion and injury prevention. I also try to incorporate supplementary exercises into my main program to work on my weaknesses and prevent injuries. I am referring to core exercises and ankle and shoulder stabilization since I have very weak feet and the shoulders are under a lot of stress in a javelin throwers training. My main training then consists of the basics I mentioned before to make me fast, strong and explosive as well as improving my throwing technique.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Asdis Hjalmsdottir:

Yes I take very good care of my body so that it can take all the stress that I am putting on it with my training. I avoid sugar and processed food and nurture my body with good quality whole foods. Generally I feel better when I lower my carbohydrate consumption and eat more fat and protein but I cycle my carbs around my workouts. After years of experimenting with myself I have figured out what foods make me feel healthy and happy and that is what I put in my body.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hair to make them look so stunning?

Ms. Asdis Hjalmsdottir:

I think the nutrition that I give my body plays a big part here, as well as the fact I grew up in Iceland where we don’t have a lot of sun for the biggest part of the year. These factors really contribute to keeping your skin looking young. I don’t have any special skin treatment and I don’t dye my hair so this is all natural and reflects how I treat my body.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding girl in the sport of javelin throw who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in the field of women javelin throw ?

Ms. Asdis Hjalmsdottir:

Love what you do and enjoy every step of the way. You should always believe in yourself and not let others bring you down because if you have passion for what you do and enjoy it then the results will follow. Many people get too caught up in focusing on a specific goal and achieving that can give you pleasure for a short time but the journey to get there is so much longer. If you enjoy every step of the way you will be much happier, your life will be better and that will translate into better results in your sport. When I was younger I made this mistake of focusing too hard on the destination but throughout the years I have learned that it really is all about the journey.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have been taking part in different sports and your personal bests are amazing. In Shot Put best is 15.68 m in Zug in August 2015, Discus Throw 49.32 m in Kopavogur in July 2015, Hammer Throw 49.46 m at Goteborg 4th July 2003 and Javelin Throw your favorite 62.77 m at London (Olympic Stadium) on 7th August 2012. How you are able to play and achieve exceptionally in multi- sports disciplines?

Ms. Asdis Hjalmsdottir:

When I first started with athletics it was pretty clear that I had a talent for the throwing events. Originally I started as a discus thrower at a very young age but as I tried out the shot put and the javelin I got a hold of them as well. For a few years my results in the javelin and the discus were very similar so I had to choose between the two events.

Javelin was where my heart was and I liked the javelin training more so that was my choice and I have never regretted that. However I kept competing in the shot and the discus for fun and for my club and my national team. I had already a good technical background in these events so I could achieve these results with very little technical training simply by being in shape for javelin. Again I think that my background in many different sports as a kid helped me and I have always been quick to adapt to technical training.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How did you feel on your memorable winning the Gold at at 2015 Games of the Small States of Europe in your home city and country Reykjavik, Iceland with a Javelin throw of 58.85 meters?

Ms. Asdis Hjalmsdottir:

Winning the gold at home in Iceland and getting to hear my national anthem at our national stadium was a lot of fun but I have to be honest and admit that it is not one of the highlights of my carrier. Setting my national record at the Olympic Games and getting to throw in the Olympic final is still one of the best moments of my life.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your biggest influence and motivation in your path to success ?

Ms. Asdis Hjalmsdottir:

My dad is without a doubt my biggest influencer. He use to be an athlete himself and later a coach in Icelandic wrestling so he was very into sports. He loved athletics and was very interested in my sports carrier so he did everything he could to give me the opportunities to follow my dreams. I will always be grateful for his help, support and sacrifice and he is a very big reason for me being where I am at today.
