Triathlete Twins Rebeccah and Laurel Wassner Reveal Their Workout, Diet & Success Secrets

Laurel and Rebeccah Wassner are professional triathletes living in New York City. Rebeccah is a three-time winner of the Nautica New York City Triathlon. Laurel is the first cancer-survivor-turned-professional triathlete. In 2010, she took second in the Nautica New York City Triathlon, finishing just two minutes behind Rebeccah.

The twins race to win championships, but also to raise awareness for the fight against cancer, particularly among young adults. In 1998, about a year after college graduation, Laurel was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. After six months of chemotherapy, Laurel spent the next few years battling fatigue and nausea while recovering her strength and rebuilding her life. Meanwhile, Rebeccah morphed into a professional athlete, competing first in marathons, before turning to triathlons in 2004.

In 2006, watching her sister race against the world’s top-ranked athletes at the ITU Elite World Championships, Laurel vowed to one day join her sister on the podium. With the help and support of friends and family, this dream became a reality when Laurel turned pro in 2008…and started chipping away at Rebeccah’s lead.

Rebeccah Wassner

Rebeccah Wassner is a three-time winner of the New York City Triathlon (’09, ’10, ’11), holds records on the Philadelphia and Columbia Triathlon courses, and was a member of the US National Team in the 2006-2007 season.

In 1998 year, when Laurel was diagnosed with cancer, Rebeccah quit her job as a CPA in Washington, DC and moved in with her twin in NYC’s West Village. Rebeccah nursed her sister through chemotherapy and a long recovery, channeling her anger and sadness about her twin’s illness into marathons, then triathlons. When Laurel had finally regained strength, Rebeccah fractured her hip while training. Benched for the next year, Rebeccah directed her ample energy toward training her sister, who quickly rose to the top of the amateur field and eventually turned pro.

Rebeccah has never uttered the phrases, “I can’t” or “I don’t want to.” This unflappable attitude has earned her athletic accolades nearly her entire life. She swam year-round from ages 7 to 18; is a three-time Maryland High School state track champion; ran Division 1 cross country and track at Mt. St. Mary’s College, where she is a 5-time school record holder; was named the 2009 USA Triathlon Athlete of the Year; and the 2004 USA Triathlon Rookie of the Year. She is most proud of her Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults “Fight” Award.

Rebeccah Wassner splits her time between New York City and New Paltz, NY. She is married to John Heppolette. When training, competing, or cooking, Rebeccah, works as a CPA at the NYC bakery Amy’s Bread.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You started at a very young age of seven years with swimming and reached the pinnacle of success by winning three-time the New York City Triathlon (’09, ’10, ’11). What factors do you consider were responsible that made you achieve that?

Ms. Rebeccah Wassner:

Hard work, first of all! When I decided to leave my career as a Chartered Accountant/CPA to become a professional triathletes, I was very focused on proving to myself that I could be the best. I knew I had the ability to compete against the world’s best, but it wasn’t easy to adapt. It took a lot of determination and willpower to stay focused on my goals.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you shall like to share?

Ms. Rebeccah Wassner:

I usually run 5 times a week, ride my bike 5 times and swim 5 times. I also spend time in the weight room with a personal fitness trainer, where we target strengthening specific muscles. Pilates mat classes are also a favorite of mine. In the off-season, I like to experiment with different sorts of exercise, like rock climbing, hiking, cross country skiing, etc.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Rebeccah Wassner:

I don’t follow a specific diet, but I eat a very healthy and balanced diet. I actually started a blog called www.athletefood.com because so many people asked me this very question! On the blog we share many of the recipes we eat to sustain our training days. I strive to eat healthy meals that taste good and always try to add as many nutrients to a meal as possible. I eat a lot!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding girl triathlete who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in the field of women try athletics ?

Ms. Rebeccah Wassner:

Go for it and don’t let an ything get in your way. Remind yourself that you are talented and you deserve whatever it is you want – whether that’s a college scholarship or a spot on the podium at a race.

When I first decided to turn pro, a person very involved in the triathlon world laughed in my face. Maybe he thought I was too small or not talented enough. So I set out to prove him wrong. I was angry with this guy at first, but now I’m thankful for the motivation he provided!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How did you feel on your memorable winning the honor of 2009 USA Triathlon Athlete of the Year ?

Ms. Rebeccah Wassner:

I am very honored to be the 2009 USAT Triathlete of the Year. I worked extremely hard and got the best out of myself that year. I was finally able to prove that I belonged on the world stage.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You were named in the year 2004, USA Triathlon Rookie of the Year. In 2009, you were named USA Triathlon Athlete of the Year. You were also honored to be inducted into the Mount St. Mary’s College Sports Hall of Fame in February 2010. What additional responsibilities these honors bestow upon you towards the community and the sports of ‘triathlon’ you competed in?

Ms. Rebeccah Wassner:

Being a decorated athlete means being an ambassador for the sport of triathlon. I’m now a role model for the community both on and off the racecourse.

I hope that through my racing and community involvement, I can inspire college students, aspiring triathletes or people trying to live a healthy lifestyle.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

While competing in the women triathletics you do swimming, cycling and running. Which out of the three discipline you enjoy the most and why?

Ms. Rebeccah Wassner:

I enjoy running the most of the three triathlon disciplines. Running was the first sport I was actually good at. It comes naturally to me more than the other two. Over the years, I’ve had to take lots of time away from running (due to injuries and having a baby), so I really cherish the days when I am able to run. Running also doesn’t require any special gear or location. You can go for a run pretty much anywhere!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You had a pelvic stress fracture in 2005 while training and was benched for the next year. How you were able to overcome such a physical injury/setback and what advice you can give to fellow sports person in a similar situation?

Ms. Rebeccah Wassner:

I suffered a serious injury just after one year of competing. It was a tough blow, but the year off gave me time to regroup and when I came back to the sport, I had one of my best seasons ever. I had to respect the injury though. I wasn’t able to run a step for 9 months and when I started running again, I only ran for 10 minutes at a time. I eventually built back to running a 10k, but it took almost a year.

The advice I would give to athletes in a similar situation is to be patient! Recognize the problem and try to solve it. Also realize that it will get better and you can come back stronger. Sometimes the body needs a little break to recharge.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have been associated with Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults “Fight” Award and a number of charities, which are all dear to your heart, tell us how you have been able to achieve and quench your thirst of giving back to the society through this endeavor of your?

Ms. Rebeccah Wassner:

Laurel and I feel passionate about raising awareness for cancer care and research. As professional athletes, who race on a large stage, we are in the position to do that. We could just go out and race, but we want to do more. Laurel’s story of overcoming cancer and going on to win an ironman is truly remarkable. It inspires me daily and I know it inspires anyone who sees her compete.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your biggest influence and motivation in your path to success ?

Ms. Rebeccah Wassner:

My sister Laurel has been my biggest influence. I would not nearly be successful without her constant support, motivation and inspiration. Knowing what she has been through and then seeing what she has achieved is something that keeps my competitive spirit fueled. She’s also my biggest supporter. She’s always there to pump me up if I’m feeling down about a workout or a race and is always the first one to congratulate me after a successful day.

Laurel is the younger half (by 5 mins) of the Wassner Twins. She is a survivor of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and is the first cancer survivor to become a professional triathlete. Laurel was named Rookie of the Year her first year as a pro (2008). Competitive and athletic from the start, by age 4 Laurel was swimming in meets, riding a bike and running (racing the cars) home from kindergarten. Laurel continued swimming and ran her first cross country race in 5th grade. She ran through Junior High (undefeated in cross country – yep never beaten by Bec!) and started focusing on swimming in High School going on to swim distance freestyle for George Washington University.

She did her first triathlon in 2006 and also won her first triathlon in 2006. After a successful year as an elite amateur in 2007 (where she had both the fastest run and swim splits in every race), Laurel turned pro in 2008. Quickly improving under Coach Cliff English, Laurel won her first pro race in 2010 at the Columbia Triathlon, becoming the first cancer survivor to win a professional triathlon, and then went on to 5 more wins. Prior to triathlon, Laurel worked for several magazines as a photo editor.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You began your athletic endeavors at the age of 4 years by swimming in meets, riding a bike and running (racing the cars) home from kindergarten. You continued swimming and ran your first cross country race in 5th grade. You ran through Junior High undefeated in cross country and started focusing on swimming in High School going on to swim distance freestyle for George Washington University. You reached the pinnacle of success by being named the Rookie of the Year in your first year as a pro (2008) and winning more professional triathlon. Tell us about your tale of professional success?

Ms. Laurel Wassner:

I started competing at a very young age – 4 years old – on our local summer league swim team. Our babysitter was a champion swimmer and taught Bec and I how to swim. We were lucky enough to live very close to the pool so we spent a lot of time there. We also started playing team sports like tee ball, softball and basketball when we were young. Being the smallest kids on the team, we were never the best but still had a huge will to win.

Also being small made us work harder, run faster to the bases and play great defense in basketball. Our dad coached the teams and instilled the sense of winning championships in us that carried over into our individual sports. When I started running, it came very naturally to me, but I also just wanted to win – and I started doing that. My closest competitor was my sister. When it came time to choose a sport to focus on in high school, I chose swimming. It was by far not the most fun – it wasn’t field hockey or tennis or lacrosse – but I knew those sports wouldn’t get me a scholarship.

I wanted to swim at the NCAA Division 1 level and I did that at George Washington University. Receiving a scholarship to swim freestyle at a prestigious university was a great honor and remains one of my biggest accomplishments. I worked very hard for that.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

One day in 1998 you felt three lumps on the left side of your neck. You were diagnosed with Stage II Hodgkin’s lymphoma. You fought back and became a cancer survivor. Tell us about your journey of endurance, fight against the impossible and coming out as a winner?

Ms. Laurel Wassner:

When I think back to all I have been through, I still am in awe of myself. Sometimes I think, “How did I go from laying on a couch for months thinking my life was over to being an ironman champion?”. In a way it feels like things like that just don’t happen! One thing that got me through was the incredible influence and unwavering support of my family and friends. No one let me lose sight of my goals and I am very grateful to that and all of the opportunities that were given to me. That being said, it takes a very strong will and determination to grab hold of opportunities and make the very best of them. I was given a chance to work in the studio of one of the most acclaimed women in photography, Mary Ellen Mark. Although I was bald and sick, I took the chance to learn from the best which set me up my career in photography. I applied that same philosophy determination to my athletic pursuits.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

In Olympic-distance Nautica New York City Triathlon 3000 participated and swam 1.5 kilometers, bicycle 40 kilometers and run 10 final kilometers through Central Park in heavy, oppressive heat. With a time of 2:02:16 you were the Runner up. Elaborate on your experience on this spectacular achievement ?

Ms. Laurel Wassner:

That race was fantastic! I was 2nd place to my sister in our hometown in front of our family and thousands of friends and fans. I was hurting so much on the hills in Central Park but at the same time was brimming with excitement.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How did you feel before and after your first pro race in 2010 at the Columbia Triathlon, becoming the first cancer survivor to win a professional triathlon?

Ms. Laurel Wassner:

Before the race I had a chat with Bec. She was injured and wasn’t able to compete. She had won the race the previous three years and said, “You have to win and keep the title in the family.” I knew it was a big feat, but I was also very confident that I could outrun everyone in the field. And, that’s what I did. I got into first with a mile to go and spent the next 6 minutes before the finish again thinking, “how is this possible? I was so sick and now I’m winning a professional race!”

I have never seen a happier bunch of people than the family and friends that greeted me at the finish line. My performance at that race put me on the map. I always knew I had it in me, but I proved to the triathlon community that I could compete with the world’s best.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about your workout routine during your days of chemotherapy and what workout routine you have now?

Ms. Laurel Wassner:

My workout routine while I was sick was very minimal. At the beginning I was rollerblading and running to the hospital but the drugs have a cumulative effect and they slowly wore me down. I got to the point where I didn’t exercise for months! I went to the gym and walked on the treadmill but I got so many comments from people that instead of feeling good about trying to exercise, I felt like I was back in junior high being made fun of for being short!

So, I turned to other things, like taking pictures, to pass my time and feel good about. Eventually, I got to the point where I could jog a little. I remember when I made it 12 minutes out on a run, I was so nervous I wouldn’t make it the 12 minutes back – but somehow I did!

Now my training is up to 7 hours a day. I swim 6 days a week (actually a lot less swimming than when I was a swimmer), run almost every day and ride my bike 5 times a week.

Kindly advice the diet you propagate for athletes and follow yourself?

Ms. Laurel Wassner:

I don’t follow a particular diet, but I do make sure that I only eat healthy foods. I splurge things I like, ice cream, cookies, etc when I have done a big day of training and could use some extra calories. I enjoy eating healthy foods and I like the way they make me feel and I like knowing they are helping my body do its job. Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Give your thoughts and being honored in 2008 as USA Triathlon rookie of the year?

Ms. Laurel Wassner:

Being named Rookie of the Year in 2008 remains one of my greatest achievements. Bec won the award in 2004, so for me to do it 4 years later was incredible. If you take a look at the superstar athletes across many sports, almost all of them started their careers as a rookie of the year. It was a huge goal for me, as I knew that would set me up for greatness!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have glowing skin and gorgeous hairs. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hairs to make them look so stunning?

Ms. Laurel Wassner:

Thank you!! I didn’t always have great skin and it was something I struggled with for a long time. When I got sick, my skin actually cleared up and although every last piece of my hair fell out, it came back soft and strong. When I was bald, all I wanted was a long hair in a pony tail bouncing behind me when I ran. It might sound like a silly goal, but to me that signified my self-confidence coming back and being normal again. Now, I have a great routine for my skin and hair.

I use a trio of Bobbi Brown products: serum, moisturizer, and eye cream. I’ve tried all sorts of creams and that combo creates really glowing skin! For my hair, I use Frederic Fekkai shampoo, conditioner, and their shine serum. I also got here to get my hair styled – they do an amazing job with blowouts and it is definitely worth the splurge if you are in New York or LA.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Prior to triathlon, You had worked for several magazines as a photo editor. Tell us about this endeavor of yours and do you still do amature pototography and editing?

Ms. Laurel Wassner:

As I mentioned above, I got into photography while I was sick. I have always had an eye for it and taking pictures was a passion and a hobby of mine I actually won a photo show in high school, but I didn’t have any idea I could make it into a career. I learned about the business and the magazine industry while and intern at Mary Ellen Mark’s studio. I had opportunities to work in various aspects of the photo world – for a gallery in Soho, for NY’s top agent, at a major studio, and I realized that what intrigued me most was magazine publishing.

I interviewed for a job at Men’s Journal magazine and got a position as a photo assistant in the Art Department. From there, I moved my way up through positions at Fast Company and then Travel + Leisure Golf. What I like most about magazines, is the collaboration between the editors, designers and photography. Our job was to make the photos as strong and visually appealing as the story we were presented with. I got to work with some amazingly talented people who have gone on to do great things. So while I may be winning triathlons, my colleagues are writing bestsellers and editing top magazines. I’m equally as proud of that success.

I still take pictures everyday – for our website and for instagram. I love having a platform to share photography and I love browsing through instagram looking at other people’s
work.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How has your relationship with your identical twin sister Rebeccah been a journey of unending happiness, inspiration and success?

Ms. Laurel Wassner:

Having a twin sister means having a lifelong best friend, and in our case, competitor, training partner and business partner. I feel fortunate that my twin also happens to be a very courageous, loyal, determined, and smart best friend! She inspires me daily. One of the many things she has done that inspires me is taking time off in the prime of her career to have a baby. It wasn’t easy but she has made her way back to the top of the sport and is inspiring others along the way.
