Ana Cláudia Lemos Talks on Being a High Performance Athlete

Ana Cláudia Lemos is a Brazilian track and field athlete who competes in sprinting events. She emerged on the international scene with gold medal wins at the 2010 South American Games and 2010 Ibero-American Championships. Lemos Silva is the reigning South American Champion over both 100 m and 200 m.  Her goal for 2019 is to became a sub10 sprinter and to brake her PB in 200m (22.48). 

Namita Nayyar:

You started off with football but soon realized that you had potential for athletics. What motivated you to make this switch?

Ana Cláudia Lemos:

I chose Track & Field because my first coach told me that I was talented. I compete for the first time representing my school without any training, although I ran 13.85 s barefoot. Soon I started to train and winning competitions. Then I realized that I could have a career on Track & Field.

Namita Nayyar:

What is the best part about having your father as your coach?

Ana Cláudia Lemos:

Well… My father is not a coach. My real coach is Katsuhico Nakaya and he is like a father to me. I guess that the relationship between coach and athlete is pretty similar as father and daughter. It`s a relationship based on trust.

Namita Nayyar:

You are the former South American record holder in the 100 metres (11.05 seconds) and the current (2017) record holder in the 200 metres. How does it feel to watch the results of your hard work as incredible benchmarks?

Ana Cláudia Lemos:

Actually my PB is 11.01 s (2015) and was the South American record until the Pan-American Games in Toronto 2015. Then until last year was the Brazilian record. Although my goal for 2019 is to became a sub10 sprinter and to brake my PB in 200m (22.48). I still want to do remarkable results.

Namita Nayyar:

To perform your best you need to fuel your body well too, your breakfast include?

Ana Cláudia Lemos:

Also, which snacks do you like to munch on during or post training?Normally I eat whole grain bread, fresh cheese, eggs and coffee&milk during breakfast. During training basically I drink a lot of water, Gatorade and sometimes some fruits. I like fruit a lot, like banana, melon, papaya and strawberry.

Namita Nayyar:

In the field of track and field, which athletes do you look upto?

Ana Cláudia Lemos:

Carmelita Jeter, Justin Gatlin, Tyson Gay and Shelly Ann-Frasier. I really admire their performance.

Namita Nayyar:

You are the reigning South American Champion in both 100 m and 200 m, what training routine do you follow presently to stay fit & strong?

Ana Cláudia Lemos:

I’m not the current South American Champion and I`m not the 100 m South American hold record anymore, but I still have the 200 m South American record. Nowadays I`m recovering from a Achilles Tendon rupture. I want to come back and get fit for the 2019 season and improve my results (100 m – 11.01 and 200 m – 22.48)

5 Favorite exercises that are a must in the workout routine of a track & field athlete.

Ana Cláudia Lemos:

I really enjoy doing coordination exercises, block starts, shorts sprints, 300m sprints and 100% sprints during training sessions.

Namita Nayyar:

What does Women Fitness mean to you?

Ana Cláudia Lemos:

Being a Women Fitness means be strong, health and show the importance of having a balance diet.

Namita Nayyar:

Stretches you follow to relax your muscles after a tough workout/training session?

Normally after a tough training session I do some treatment on swimming pool, bucket of ice and massage.

Namita Nayyar:

One piece of advice that you would like to give to athletes who are beginners?

That they work hard, with discipline, focus and with professionalism.

Namita Nayyar:

Which upcoming competitions are you preparing for now?

Ana Cláudia Lemos:

As I told you before, I`m recovering from a Achilles Tendon rupture. My goal is to get fit for 2019 and be prepared for the Pan American Games – Lima 2019 and IAAF World Championships – Doha 2019.

Namita Nayyar:

5 things you always carry to your training session?

Ana Cláudia Lemos:

In my backpack I always carry a bottle of water, towel, cereal bar, Gatorade and my spikes. But I always carry with me my force of willing, discipline, focus, joy and motivation.

Namita Nayyar:

Athletic clothing you vouch for?

Ana Cláudia Lemos:

Normally I enjoy wearing shorts, tops, tank tops and long tights.
