Bencic won her first two WTA titles in 2015, including the Canadian Open where she defeated four of the top six players in the world. Women Fitness President Ms. Namita Nayyar had a candid interview with Belinda Bencic, World leading Tennis Player where she talks about her workout, diet, and success story.

Namita Nayyar:

Coming from sport-loving parents and starting off at the age of two you reached your career-high Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking of No. 4 in the world in February 2020. Walk us through your spectacular journey and share what appeals to you the most about this sport ?

Belinda Bencic:

Yeah, I mean, I really love this sport, I think I liked the most since I was a little girl was that it was very competitive. And in everything I did, I just did to see the sense of, like, playing a game and being not satisfied with losing. So I would always have to win. And that’s what I feel and appreciate in tennis.

Also, the most that you can play every week, a tournament and be so competitive, you have so many chances, on competing and. Yeah, I mean, it’s been a wonderful journey so far. , and I have come from junior year. I had so many experiences. I have learned so much so I saw so many different countries and cultures and everything.

So, I think it’s great, like we get to see the world and we have so many opportunities to play. And also it does satisfy my competitiveness.

Namita Nayyar:

You were trained by Melanie Molitor, the mother, and coach of world No. 1 Swiss tennis player Martina Hingis. How were the initial years in the sport? According to you how five keys you learned from her as a coach?

Belinda Bencic:

Yes, I was trained with Melanie Molitor, she was a very tough coach for sure, but she had so much experience already because she played with Martina and she could raise Martina into a champion. So for sure, I was learning everything, that she taught me and it was not even the key points, she was just telling me the experiences she had with Martina.

And then it was about me, too, to pick out what I needed to learn from and what I needed to take out from myself. But of course, I think technique wise from tennis and tactic wise, she has taught me everything from zero to, where I am now. And yet you just learn a lot in discipline and concentration and anticipation in tennis, so I think these are the key points.

Namita Nayyar:

Introduce us to a day in your life. One thing you must do every morning.

Belinda Bencic:

So a day in my life right now, I wake up, I walk our dog, or take a run with her and I come back, I have breakfast. One thing I must do every morning is that I have to have water with lemon. I squeeze the lemon into water and after that I have breakfast.

I do some things in the house, like laundry and cleaning everything. And then I go to practice usually around 10:00. Actually, first I go to the gym to warm up, like a fitness warm up for practice that I practice around, usually around 10:00 or 11:00 for one and a half hours.

Then I come back home, I have lunch, and I rest a little bit. And then again in the afternoon I usually play some practice matches with another girl. And after that I have physical training, and after that I come home, I have physio or I have a recovery stretching.

Rolling, like, yeah, I’m just rolling myself out and then in the evening, we go to the city for some dinner and ice cream or I cook dinner at home. We have a nice movie night, and that’s it.

 Namita Nayyar:

Five exercises that essentially comprise your workout routine? Five essentials to keep in mind and follow to prevent injury or overcome it? Your advice to beginners.

Belinda Bencic:

Oh, my advice for five exercises, I think it’s very individual, especially for preventing injury, of course, depends on how your body is and what you have. I’m really glad I found a routine with my fitness coach, and we are doing this before every match and on the tournaments.

And it’s basically, it’s a warm up where he just activates my muscles by massaging them or like, with the hyper ice machine.

And then we make some mobility and then we do the active up. So the active warm up for the muscles. And I think for me it’s really important to make some core before practice to stabilize and also to stabilize my ankles.

 Namita Nayyar:

A diet that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit? Two supplements that are key essential for immunity and enhanced performance.

Belinda Bencic:

I don’t have a key diet that I follow, but of course I’m watching what I eat. I need to stay fit, of course, and healthy and of course, watch my weight all the time. So I’m just trying to eat healthy and just see what works best for me. I have like a routine before the match. I eat rice with olive oil and salt. I think it’s the best for me.

I don’t feel heavy, but I still feel energized, two supplements that I use. I mean, I use all the supplements from sponsor sports foods and I think they’re the best for isotonic drinks, recovery drinks and protein drinks are the all the supplements that I have. I take them also for my immunity. I always have the water with lemon in the morning.

Namita Nayyar:

Training in extreme weather conditions can show its toll on hair & skin, five tips you follow for skin, and hair care?

Belinda Bencic:

Yes, for sure. I have a skin and hair routine after when I’m in the zone. I always use some oil in my hair in the end to keep it hydrated. I don’t have special brands I use. I always mix it up and see what works best for my skin.

Also, I always wear sunscreen when I go out. I think that’s the most important rule. Of course, because we are always playing in the sun and my skin is all the time hydrated and sometimes even oily. So I don’t use much extra hydration and just kind of cleaning, always removing makeup before I go to sleep.

 Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your greatest influence and motivator in your success in the field of your career? Quote, you live by.

Belinda Bencic:

The biggest influence is for sure in my dad and my career for sure, is the rest of the family to my mom, my brother and from the coach was for sure, Melanie Monitor, she being my coach that had had the maximum influence on me.

Quote, I live by, I think you have to give luck a chance. So I believe that if you always giving 100 per cent in everything and things are still not working out for you, I believe that if you continue to do so and then the things will totally like work out for you and someday you will be lucky.

Namita Nayyar:

In the current pandemic situation, how are you keeping yourself busy while staying at home?

Belinda Bencic:

In the current pandemic situation, I’m keeping myself busy while staying at home. To be honest, I haven’t been bored at all at home. I had so many so much time to do different things. I cleaned the entire house. I kind of organized my entire closet. I did really some painting, some puzzles, watching movies, really all the things I didn’t have time to do. So I’m enjoying it very much, to be honest. And of course, now I’m really busy with practicing also in the pandemic. I was working out twice a day, so, Yeah. So that’s how I keep myself busy.

Namita Nayyar:

Share with us your current home workout routine?

Belinda Bencic:

Well, I don’t really have a routine every time I work out; it’s always a different training with my fitness coach because I really like the change and love that he is keeping training creative. It’s important for me. So I don’t get bored or tired of the same things. I always like to take a run, sometimes a couple of times a week, and sometimes not even for training, but also just for active recovery and to kind of release my head and mind, I think running is great. But for sure, I am certainly strengthening muscles, doing a lot of Abs workouts and kind of, Yeah!! Changing it up.

Namita Nayyar:

From 2016 through 2018, you struggled with a variety of injury issues. What was your recovery period like that helped you in making a stronger comeback?

Belinda Bencic:

Yeah, with my injuries I struggled with. And the most important thing was that I came back mentally stronger, it helped me mentally to be kind of get through these injuries. I always said that I started to appreciate tennis more because before that I took everything for granted. I took it for granted that I played and I was always mad when I lost. And now I’m just really happy that I can play tennis and I’m really having more fun playing it. So I think it helped me a lot to have a little bit of a break doing and having some tough times, so I think in the end, everything happens for a cause, so I believe it happened so I can learn this thing.

Namita Nayyar:

Social media has gained significance nowadays, how do you use it to inspire your audience?

Belinda Bencic:

Social media to be honest, I don’t kind of over rate it too much. Of course, I know now it’s very important. You have your own brand and you need to use it. You need to gain followers and this it. But I just don’t see this way. I use my social media like it’s my personal account.

And I have just my friends there and I use it very naturally. I’m not always thinking about what I’m posting and that I have to post every day something. But I just want like want to keep it natural and just post however I feel and just not take it so much to my mind and also to give it my time because I think, I’m a tennis player, and that’s what I do the best is being on the court and, so I’m not trying to become like a tennis influencer or something.
