bo derek

Bo Derek is an American film and television actress, movie producer, and model, best known for her breakthrough role in the 1979 film 10. The film also launched a bestselling poster for Derek in a swimsuit, and subsequently she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1980s.

An aspiring model, 16-year-old Mary Catherine Collins met Hollywood’s John Derek in 1973, and he molded her into a superstar, married her, and Bo Derek was born. Her second film, the comedy 10, had Derek bouncing along the beach in slow motion and became the stuff of legend. She followed this success with two adventure films directed by her husband: Tarzan the Ape Man (1981) and Bolero (1984).

Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness catches up with the Stunning Actress Bo Derek on her spectacular journey.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You did your first modeling job at 15 with hopes of buying a new surfboard and soon caught the public eye with your breakout role in the hit film “10”, when your natural beauty and cornrow hairstyle ignited a global fashion craze. Walk us through your incredible journey as an actor.

Ms. Bo Derek:

I wasn’t discovered at the lunch counter of Schwab’s drug store… but close enough. My mother was Ann-Margret’s friend and hairdresser. When I was 16 years old, I was backstage in Ann-Margret’s dressing room at the Las Vegas Hilton where an agent came in for a meet and greet with her. He turned to me and said, “You should be in movies”. I remember thinking that it was a fine idea. One casting call led to another and eventually, I met Blake Edwards who was in the middle of an international search for the “Perfect Woman – on a scale of 1 to 10. The gods were with me that day and I came home with the part.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Introduce us to a day in your life.

Ms. Bo Derek:

My day begins early as dogs and horses don’t let you sleep in. I swear my dogs hear the change in my breathing before I even know I’m awake because as I open my eyes, there they are alert and all wiggly.

Then, as I look out the window there are four horses and a donkey staring at me, and just in case you didn’t know – they’re starving. And the house rule is…Everyone eats before I do.

Breakfast is not my favorite meal of the day, so it might be a bowl of oatmeal, boiled eggs or my favorite Danish pancakes from our nearby town of Solvang. After morning chores and a little office work, I head to the pool at the YMCA for a mile swim, hopefully three days a week. I hate exercise and am quite expert at talking myself out of it. I swim with a waterproof iPod and I’m now listening to Brad Thor’s, Scott Harvath series audiobooks. A real page turner is at least, something to look forward to.

I’ve taken up Openwater Swimming with a girlfriend. We have vowed to each other that we will enter a 4-6k competition once a year in a pretty place. Its important for me to have a goal to train for.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You are world leading media personality, actress, producer, model, activist and businesswoman. How do you manage such a remarkable multi-dimensional lifestyle?

Ms. Bo Derek:

I don’t! I’m a natural born procrastinator so I’m always rushing to make deadline. A couple of years ago I took up meditating with Headspace, which has helped me organize my thoughts and time.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine?

Ms. Bo Derek:

Other than swimming…chores. Life around the ranch will keep you fit. Actually cleaning your house can be a great workout. I’m not one for gyms.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What kind of diet do you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Bo Derek:

Have you seen what Michael Phelps eats? Swimming allows me to eat whatever I want.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Share with us your hair care and skincare routine.

Ms. Bo Derek:

Thank you. My skin is very sun damaged, the effects of which I am constantly fighting. I do whatever my dermatologist tells me to do and use lots of sunscreen… Anthelios. My hair color is my own except for some highlights every 3 months.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have acted in multiple film/TV projects like Tommy Boy, Fashion House, Tarzan the Ape Man and 10 to name a few. Share with us one of the most memorable experience that you’ve had through these movies.

Ms. Bo Derek:

All these films have a book of stories and adventures but what means the most to me are the actors I worked with. Richard Harris, Anthony Hopkins, Shirley MacClaine, Anthony Quinn, Chris Farley. Legends all and I still marvel that they even know who I am.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Your fashion has always been talked about. Tell us your current Top 5 Fashion Must Haves!

Ms. Bo Derek:

Hmm?

  1. A great tuxedo jacket in black and white.
  2. I am a boot snob. A great pair of tall, black, high heel, suede boots. Mine are Jimmy Choo and I cherish them.
  3. A close fitting, but not clingy turtleneck. I like Zara.
  4. A long jersey dress in any color. Halston.
  5. A leather jacket. It hips up an outfit.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have done various photo shoots with several top magazines like the Playboy. How are you so body confident and advice to your compatriots?

Ms. Bo Derek:

I grew up on the beaches of southern California where we wore the tiniest string bikinis. So really – what’s the difference? Three little bandaid sized spots? I find its what you’re doing and what attitude you take while sans- clothes that matters.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have been associated actively with Wild Aid, Yasuni-ITT rainforest preservation and various disabled veterans organizations, California Horseracing Commissioner that are dear to your heart, tell us how have you been able to achieve and quench your thirst of giving back to the society through this endeavor of yours?

Ms. Bo Derek:

I have never set out to be an activist or even make a difference. But my life has put me in the path of some truly admirable people who are doing historic, life changing work. These are my heroes and sometimes they ask for my help. I’m honored when I can.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You also have a wonderful pet care product business, Bo Derek Pet Care. Tell us about this fantastic endeavor of yours.

Ms. Bo Derek:

Born of necessity! 15 years ago I had a dozen smelly dogs that I wanted to live in the house with me. I worked with chemists to create shampoos and conditioners and that are quick and easy to use that make to coat so soft you can’t keep your hands off your dog. But its all about the patented fragrance that actually nuetralizes malordors. Its brilliant! www.boderekpetcare.com
