Olympic Champion Brianna Rollins shares her spectacular journey into the world of athletics, in an exclusive interview with Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You are known as one of the best American track and field athletes, being the 2013 World champion and the 2016 Olympic champion in the 100 meter hurdles. Walk us through your spectacular journey and tell us how it all began?

Ms. Brianna Rollins:

I started running track when I was 14 yrs old. It was my freshman year of high school I had no idea what I was getting myself into I just knew I wanted to do it. I had no clue about any of the events that were ran in track all I knew is I wanted to run. So I started off racing in the 400 and the 200, dabbled in the triple jump, but it was until I was watching one of my high school teammates hurdle and right then I decided that I wanted to be a hurdler. The 100 hurdles didn’t come as easy for me until my sophomore year, I was a 300 hurdler first but that changed in college. I was recruited specifically for the 400 hurdles but injuries prevented me to get fit for the event. The 100 hurdles was my destiny. After overcoming the injuries I finally blossomed into the 100 hurdler I knew I could be once I took it seriously. Since then I have been blessed with the opportunity to travel the world and do what I love.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

As of 2017, your time of 12.26 is tied as the fourth-fastest run in history. How do you feel about being the first of a kind to set a benchmark and to be able to inspire so many like you?

Ms. Brianna Rollins:

I just feel very blessed that I have been given the talent to inspire others to reach for higher heights. I never knew I could be this great of an athlete. My coach, Lawrence Johnson always would tell me I could be this or that but sometimes as humans we don’t hear it. We think that oh they’re just saying that for encouragement but little did I know it was true or maybe that just me. People can sometimes see greatest within us before we see it ourselves. So now that I have seen the things I could do I know that there is much more since I truly believe. It all starts with believing in ourselves.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Introduce us to a day in the life of an athlete, preparing for the Olympic Games.

Ms. Brianna Rollins:

I would get up in the morning put some boiled eggs on the stove then read for about 30 mins. Eat breakfast which would consist of 2-3 boiled eggs, sautéed spinach, and a piece of fruit with about 16oz of water. Head to practice which takes about 2-3 hours then eat lunch then head to the weight room which is only done MWF, that takes about 1.5 hours then get home shower then chill for the rest of the day. Repeat.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine that you may like to share?

Ms. Brianna Rollins:

One of my favorite workout routine is the weight. Focusing on power and strength. This would consist of 4 sets of 4 power cleans, 4 sets of 4 deadlifts. After the Olympic lifts we focus on stability and strength and that would consist of single arm row, pull ups, single leg hip thrust, and side planks.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Brianna Rollins:

Diet is definitely important for track and field athletes. Getting the right amount of protein and carb ratio helps the muscle recover and the amount of energy we need to train and compete and making sure I eat a lot of greens. I try to eat greens with every meal. I try my best to stay away from sweets and greasy foods but I will allow myself to have a cheat day. There’s a balance.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Training for professional sports requires you to be out in the extreme weather. How are you able to take care of your skin and hair?

Ms. Brianna Rollins:

OMG I live in sunny California in the Valley where it is extremely hot and dry so skin and hair regiments are important. I make sure that I have a light moisturizer for my face and skin that has sunscreen in it to protect my skin from getting burnt. After I’m done training I make sure I exfoliate to get rid of all the dirt and dead skin. I love my hair so I try my very best to take care of it. So my weekly hair regiment consist of a deep conditioner, sometimes I would leave the conditioner in my hair while I am in practice just so that it can get some extra moisture from the heat. After I cleanse and rinse the conditioner I apply a leave in, and a moisturizing creme when I am doing a braid out. Moisturizing my hair is very key since I am always in the sun.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your greatest influence and motivator in your success in the field of your career?

Ms. Brianna Rollins:

Would say my entire support team are my greatest influence. My fiancé, coach, agent, physical therapist, friends all make sure that I am okay and always keeping me on my A game. I am motivated by my younger brothers and all of the other kids that are watching me. Making sure that I am setting the best example that I can so that maybe they would be inspired to reach their dreams.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Having participated in multiple events like the Olympics, World Championships, etc. tell us about one of the most memorable experience that you may have had at these Games.

Ms. Brianna Rollins:

I have so many memorable moments that I can’t choose just one. Breaking the American record, making my first Olympic team and being on the podium with my sisters at the Olympics would all be moments that I would cherish forever.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding athletes who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in this field?

Ms. Brianna Rollins:

Always keep God first. Believe in yourself no matter what, there are no limits to what you can achieve. Climbing to the top will not always be easy so continue to fight through until you reach your destiny.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

In 2013, you were presented the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Athlete of the Year Award. How did you feel about it?

Ms. Brianna Rollins:

That was an amazing year for me so it was a great feeling to be honored with one of that award and presented by Jackie Joyner-Kersee herself. Being put in a category with her means a lot and its all a blessing.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about your preparations for the future Championships.

Ms. Brianna Rollins:

Right now I am focusing on my diet a lot more. That is one of the things I struggle with the most so putting 100% effort into that will be a really good change for me. I’ll continue to work hard and continue to pursue the goal of being the best that has ever done it.
