Ekaterina Vedeneeva: Slovenian rhythmic gymnast, World Games Bronze Medalist mantra of success “Look in one direction, have one goal”

Ekaterina Olegovna Vedeneeva is a Russian individual rhythmic gymnast competing for Slovenia since 2018. She made her debut for Slovenia in August 2018 at the World Cup event in Kazan, Russian Federation. On national level, she is a three-time (2019, 2021, and 2022) Slovenian National All-around champion. In 2021, she became the first Slovenian rhythmic gymnast to compete at Summer Olympics in Tokyo. She is the first Slovenian rhythmic gymnast and first Slovenian gymnast of any discipline to win a medal in the history of The World Games.

In April 2019 she became the first Slovenian to earn a medal at the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup, a bronze medal in the ribbon final at the Tashkent World Cup. In 2020, she started the season at Grand Prix in Moscow, she competed in all Apparatus Finals and won bronze medal in ribbon final with a score of 19.900. This was her second Grand Prix medal.

In 2021, she started the season at Grand Prix in Moscow, where she qualified to all apparatus finals and won bronze medal in ribbon final with score 22.050, repeating her 2020 success. During the 2021 World Cup series, Vedeneeva qualified for an Olympic berth. At the Moscow World Challenge Cup she won bronze in the All-around – the first World Cup all-around medal for Slovenia. The following day she added 3 more bronze medals in ball, clubs and ribbon.

Women Fitness President Ms. Namita Nayyar catches up with Ekaterina Vedeneeva an exceptionally talented Slovenian rhythmic gymnast, here she talks about her fitness routine, her diet, her skin, and hair care and success story.

Namita Nayyar:

You were born in Irkutsk, Russia and now live in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Your mother, Julia Vedeneeva, has coached you in rhythmic gymnastics and you started training in rhythmic gymnastics in your hometown Irkutsk in Russia. You made your debut for Slovenia in August 2018 at the World Cup event in Kazan, Russian Federation. On a national level, you are a two-time (2019 & 2021) Slovenian National All-around champion. This later propelled your career to the height where you have been at the top of the world as a leading rhythmic gymnast. Tell us more about your journey of exceptional hard work, tenacity, and endurance?

Ekaterina Vedeneeva:

I was not trained with my mother but she just got me into gymnastics. She really works as a coach, since 2008. I have been doing gymnastics for 23 years. I love this sport and live it! The first successes began at the age of 10-12 years, and then I began to win regional and all-Russian competitions, then, when I switched to the senior program.

I became a member of the Russian national team; I was the winner of the Championships and Cups of Russia, a multiple winner and prize-winners of international tournaments, playing for Russia. In 2018, I changed my citizenship in order to get into more serious and major competitions, such as the World Cup and the Olympic Games. Since then, my sports life has been connected with this wonderful country of Slovenia.

Namita Nayyar:

You in April 2019 became the first Slovenian to earn a medal at the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup, a bronze medal in the ribbon final at the Tashkent World Cup. That same year you became the first Slovenian to win a medal at the Rhythmic Gymnastics Grand Prix, a silver medal in the ball final at the Holon Grand Prix in Israel. In 2020, you started the season at the Grand Prix in Moscow, where you competed in all Apparatus Finals and won a bronze medal in the ribbon final with a score of 19.900. Tell us more about your experience of these spectacular exceptional achievements?

Ekaterina Vedeneeva:

I am very glad that I can raise the Slovenian flag at competitions at this level

Without a coach there would be nothing. And of course, the support of close people who are exactly the same with you towards your goal. Rejoice you victories, experience failures, but always believe in yourself and support you.

Namita Nayyar:

You are the First Slovenian rhythmic gymnast to win a medal in an individual apparatus final at the FIG World Cup series, the First Slovenian rhythmic gymnast to win a gold medal in an individual apparatus final at the FIG World Cup series, First Slovenian rhythmic gymnast to win a medal in an individual All-around at the FIG World Cup series and First Slovenian rhythmic gymnast to compete at the Olympic Games. How do you manage such remarkable achievements and how they shall be a catalyst to your more exceptional sporting achievements in the sports of rhythmic gymnastics to come?

Ekaterina Vedeneeva:

Depending on the competition, the preparation is always different, so the schedule of the day is also adjusted in accordance with the competition schedule.

Namita Nayyar:

Do you take a special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ekaterina Vedeneeva:

I don’t stick to diets; I try to eat right and regularly. Sometimes I can afford both fast food and cake. The main thing is to know the measure.

Namita Nayyar:

Five foods you absolutely love and five you keep to a minimum.

Ekaterina Vedeneeva:

I love pasta with salmon, tiramisu, pancakes, Caesar salad, cucumber. I don’t like bigos, cabbage rolls, jelly, pate, dumplings.

Namita Nayyar:

You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Share with us your haircare and skincare routine. What special care do you take for both during extreme winter weather?

Ekaterina Vedeneeva:

I use salon products, I go to a beautician and a hairdresser, I select care depending on the condition of the skin and hair.

Namita Nayyar:

Your rhythmic gymnastics routines demonstrate a strong grounding in classical ballet technique, in particular your well-executed pirouettes which are distinctively often performed a la seconde. Your signature moves in this position include pivots completed in arabesque, attitude, and ring style. While being incredibly talented, you have also expressed the challenges of incorporating enough apparatus difficulty elements in a routine to both preserve the artistic integrity of the sport and accumulate enough marks to be competitive and fair in the new open-ended marking system where you believe in preferences for the former? Elaborate on your liking and signature style of performing rhythmic gymnastics routines?

Ekaterina Vedeneeva:

My style is classic, this is the style of Oksana Kostina, Marina Lobach. These are lines, grace and beauty. For me, gymnastics is an art.

Ekaterina Vedeneeva:

Set a goal, and go towards it in spite of any obstacles. Be honest, Fight honestly, Respect your opponents, Trust your coach and Love what you do. Thank God for what you have and work hard to get more. Love and work are the main components of success.
