Namita Nayyar:

1. How did acting happen to you?

Jandae Percem:

I always wanted to pursue acting. When I was in elementary school I enjoyed performing in the end of year plays. When I was in college, studying IT, I found myself in search of who I was and what I really wanted in life. I knew becoming an actress would be a dream come true and with the snap of a finger I decided to goto New York City to pursue my dream.  I went to Stella Adler in NYC and then moved to Istanbul to continue my acting career.

Namita Nayyar:

Best part you enjoy about being an actress?

Jandae Percem:

I like being able to drop who I am and let the audience live vicariously through me. While acting I lose the concept of time and who I am – to me that experience and excitement is living.

Namita Nayyar:

Share your favorite workout routine?

Jandae Percem:

I workout every other day to avoid overdoing it and to recover.  My workout routine changes often to keep the excitement up.  The rowing machine is a great way to get my heart rate up followed by some kind of isolated muscular training.  I finish each workout with abs.  My favorite is leg day where I do squats and dead lifts.  I truly believe maintaining a slightly athletic build is the key to looking and feeling great.

Namita Nayyar:

A healthy breakfast for you would include? What do you like to have for dinner? also on weekends?

Jandae Percem:

It’s good to start your day eating fruits.  It starts up your metabolism, provides natural sugars for energy.  A healthy breakfast in my opinion after fruits can include toast with smashed avocado, oatmeal with fruits and nuts, or a smoothie with your favorite fruits and almond or coconut milk.  For dinner, I like the combination of baked salmon, quinoa and kale salad.  I also like a simple mediterranean dish such as falafel with hummus.

Namita Nayyar:

Your favorite fashion icon?

Jandae Percem:

I have several names for this one but Rihanna is probably my favorite.  Besides her incredible music I like her taste in fashion.  She sometimes wears casual or combines casual with classic designer outfits which has inspired my wardrobe.

Namita Nayyar:

Share your post pregnancy workout regime and diet that help you return back to your physical best? 3 Must-do exercises?

Jandae Percem:

When I was pregnant nausea cut my energy in half and I stopped working out and many moms go through this.  It’s hard to break free of this natural state, but it starts with the right mindset.  The first few months after pregnancy I felt very hungry and kept eating which I think was caused by breastfeeding.  6 months post partum, I began cutting out unnecessary carbs and sugars (especially snacks and anything processed) and then slowly ramped up my workout regimen.  Doing this helped me lose most of the pregnancy weight.  Cardio, pull-ups, and squats are my must-do exercises…always keeping good posture throughout!

Namita Nayyar:

Your favorite cheat meal would look like?

Jandae Percem:

If have to go with pizza and chocolate lava cake!

Namita Nayyar:

Favourite active wear brands?

Jandae Percem:

I like Nike and Adidas.  You can’t go wrong with these two.

Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about your upcoming projects?

Jandae Percem:

I recently directed and produced my first feature film, “Entity Project”.  Now that the post-production of it is done and it’s ready for film festivals, we’re working on another feature film “Under The Snow”. This film will be more art focused to appeal to festival format to bring awareness to the struggles of a teacher who gets relocated to Eastern Turkey in early 90s. The film will show the struggles of the local villagers, especially kids, who walk miles and miles in the snow to reach to the closest school to get education.  We have few more projects coming up such as a documentary and a short-film, the short is about the post-portum depression many moms suffer. But it’s too early to elaborate on them.

Namita Nayyar:

Your morning beauty ritual before a shoot? Your hair care routine would include?

Jandae Percem:

I follow the same ritual AM and PM for my skin.  After cleansing my face and neck area, I apply brightening serum, rejuvenating serum, moisturizer, and SPF. I do this before a shoot too.  At night, I do the exact same ritual minus the SPF, but I apply a Vitamin E oil at the end and I make sure that I drink plenty of water all day long which helps balance oil on skin and prevents dryness.  For my hair, I use products that don’t have the harmful chemicals and I apply a hair mask once a week.  I also make sure none of the products I use test on animals.

Namita Nayyar:

After a long hard-working day, you relax with?

Jandae Percem:

I relax by staying home with my son, meditating, reading books and watching my favorite shows and films.  Little Atlas likes it when I read books which can be very relaxing for both of us.

Namita Nayyar:

5 things that you carry before leaving your house?

Jandae Percem:

Chapstick, deodorant, a book of my choice for the day, moisturizer, and my crystals for positive energy.

Namita Nayyar:

3 songs that are on top of your workout playlist?

Jandae Percem:

Right now it’s Shallow from the movie A Star Is Born by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, Desperado by Rihanna, and Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.

Namita Nayyar:

How do you create a balance between your work and personal life?

Jandae Percem:

I try my best not to bring work to my personal life and I leave my personal life out of my work. When I know I need to focus on work, I absolutely avoid anything that can distract me because I get distracted easily.
And when I’m with my son, family, or friends, I try to stay present and focus on them.  Of course it’s not easy but trying to be present helps.

Namita Nayyar:

What made you start your own film production company Oceans Filmworks?

Jandae Percem:

Becoming a mom, I took one year from acting to focus on the well-being of my son.  Many moms aren’t able to do this due to the system we have here in the US so I’m glad I was able to do that.

When it was time to continue pursuing acting and going back to work, it wasn’t easy because I also had to parent at the same time.  It wasn’t easy time-wise chasing auditions and doing all this at the same time.  So I decided to do my own work, direct/produce and act on my own time.  My first film was a good and fun start-up project since, but going forward we will be focusing on real-life stories in the art format to become the voice for those who do not have the opportunity to speak up.
