Loose-fitted Trousers: Draping Tips to Look Great

Kat Woodside, Chief Design Officer for cabi

Dressing in loose trousers has become even more popular during the pandemic as more women want comfort. Women are moving away from the traditional fitted skinny fit jean and into a more comfortable draped trouser. The good news is that these are acceptable to wear anywhere- from work from home to even formal offices.

Any body type and age can wear loose trousers- but it’s all about two things length and the outfit you create.

Proportions are key.

Make sure that the length is appropriate for your height. As a rule of thumb, use the bottom of your ankle bone as a guideline for where your pants should end.

If you go baggy and loose on the bottom, consider a top that nips you in at the waist.

a. Cropped length tops are perfect if they kiss the top of the waistband.

b. Tuck in your top completely. If you do a top that is loose fit too, it’ll look too frumpy. It’ll be more flattering for you if you balance out the loose fitting pants with a fitted t-shirt, blouse or even sweater.

Fabrication Matters

A cool baggy knit pants that drapes beautifully on the body can be incredibly flattering. Stiff and heavy fabricsin a baggy trouser tend to be very unflattering.

“When it comes to fabrics to invest in, I recommend focusing on natural fibers– cotton, wool, linen and natural fibers with a blend of manmade fibers (polyester, acrylic). It should have mostly natural fibers in the blend for longevity and comfort.” adds  Cassandra Sethi, NYC Personal Stylist and Image Consultant. Show a Little Skin

Try a short sleeve on top, or an off theshoulder top so you aren’t completely overwhelmed by fabric.

Add a Roll on the Cuff

Show off a sexy strappy high heel sandal or cool high heel booty to add length.

Wear a Chic Attitude

Baggy can be very attractive and the days of women needing to wear only tight clothing to feel sexy are over.

According to Cassandra “If you’re new to this style, I recommend investing in a navy pair to start out with. Then if you like, integrate a lighter color like heather grey.”
