Abuse and Depression Linked in Women

– Reported, May 10, 2013

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – In a study led by Karen Devries from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, researchers found that women who have been abused by a partner are more likely to be depressed and depressed women are more likely to be abused by a partner. Furthermore, this cycle of partner violence and depression seems to only be true for women, while men are seemingly unaffected.

Using previously published studies, researchers discovered women were twice as likely to develop depression if they had been physically abused by a partner in the past. On the flip side, women with depression had double the odds of experiencing partner abuse in the future. Researchers hope these results could be used to help prevent future depression or domestic violence.
