Beating “Super Germs” With Breast Milk

– Reported, May 03, 2013

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – New research found a protein complex in breast milk, which is called Human Alpha-lactalbumin Made Lethal to Tumor Cells (HAMLET), can make drug-resistant “superbugs,” like MRSA, more sensitive to antibiotics.

Using petri dish and animal experiments, researchers saw that the bacteria was unable to develop a resistance to HAMLET and also began to die in large numbers after exposure to the protein. Researchers are hopeful that the protein complex used in conjunction with well-known antibiotics will help to resolve the growing problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
