Fat Grafts Used for Breast Augmentation

– Reported, October 01 2013

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – A new study from Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark, finds that stem-cell enriched fat grafting may be a preferred alternative for reconstructive surgery.

Liposuction is a common cosmetic procedure, but lipofilling is the latest technique used by plastic surgeons. Doctors preserve a patient’s unwanted fat in an area of the body and place it in a more desired area according to the patient.

Though the procedure is not 100% guaranteed, researchers are finding that fat grafts enhanced with adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) may have a greater success. This could potentially open doors for breast cancer patients who are looking into reconstructive surgery.

“A crucial open question that will affect use of this therapy is whether there is an optimum cell dose for efficacy, and/or if there is a critical threshold cell dose for therapeutic effect…Another unresolved issue for this therapy is whether high concentrations of stem cells can stimulate the growth of residual breast cancer cells…This issue will be best addressed in large clinical trials”, Dr. Trojahn Kølle was quoted as saying.

More studies need to be done to guarantee patients with a successful outcome, but it will be interesting to see if this technique will grow into preferred method of cosmetic surgery.
