Hungry? Don’t Go Grocery Shopping!

– Reported, May 10, 2013

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – According to new research by Brian Wansink, Ph.D., and Aner Tal, Ph.D., from Cornell University, people may be more likely to buy higher-calorie foods if they are hungry while grocery shopping.

The suggested effect of hunger on grocery store selections is based on results from a laboratory study in which 68 individuals were instructed to not eat for five hours beforehand and were then given various food options, but some participants were given crackers so they were not hungry. In a follow-up study, researchers recorded the grocery purchases of 82 individuals, some of which were told to shop between 4pm and 7pm when they were likely to be hungry. In both studies participants who were hungry while picking out groceries chose higher-calorie products compared to participants who were not hungry.
