Maternal mortality in Russia down more than 50% since 2005

– Reported, July 13, 2013

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Tuesday that the country’s maternal mortality rate had dropped over 50% since 2005, from 25.4 to 11.5 of 100,000 in 2012.

Last year’s number was 29% lower than 2011, the prime minister added. He attributed the decrease to government programs supporting better and more modern medical care.

The Health and Development Foundation also works to improve maternal and child health through several of its programs, including Text4baby Russia. Subscribers to Text4baby Russia receive free SMS messages to their mobile phones with information on how to care for their own health and that of their children.

Messages contain information about nutrition, sleep, mental health, developmental milestones, appointment reminders, and more. These messages, together with free webinars for new and expectant mothers with medical experts, and a virtual community connecting subscribers with other moms, help them to stay informed and healthy throughout their pregnancies.
