Managing Mental Health and Staying Well During Stressful Times

February 15, 2023 By Namita Nayyar (WF Team)

There are a number of practical ways to manage mental health and stay emotionally well during stressful, challenging times. We face daily challenges in life that can be stressful, troublesome, and overwhelming. Despite these stressful situations, it’s important to remain strong, conscious, and resilient. Ultimately, you should learn to cope with and manage stress in the most healthy manner. Whether you’re dealing with stressors from illness, accidents, financial struggles, or relationship turbulence – there are several practical strategies that can help. Read on to learn about managing mental health and staying well during stressful times.

Top 10 Exercises for All-round Physical Fitness

Stay Physically Active

Staying physically active and exercising regularly can have a major impact on mental health – especially during cold winter months and challenging periods of life. Follow the latest fitness trends of 2023 to get yourself out, up, and moving. Make regular exercise a habit in your daily routine – even if you just have five or ten minutes. Try to cut out time when you would be watching TV, scrolling through social media, or laying in bed. Start off with something easy, like a light jog, brisk walk, or quick yoga session. Slowly, you can elevate your workout regimen to include more active and intensive exercises. You should also commit to walking up the stairs, cleaning your car by hand, or mowing the lawn by yourself. Certainly, stay physically active to better manage your mental health and cope with stressful scenarios.

Work With A Certified Addiction Professional

Professional addiction counseling, support, and therapy are powerful mental health resources during stressful times. Men and women across the United States turn to drugs and alcohol during challenging situations. Accredited mental health providers and recovery centers help people end substance abuse dependencies. According to Sherief Abu-Moustafa, a mental health and addiction recovery specialist  “patients require different modalities of treatment to receive a well-rounded recovery plan.” Addressing different aspects of daily living, these programs empower you to re-establish a healthy lifestyle following guided, evidence-backed processes. So, you’ll feel confident – rather than confused at the end of recovery treatment. Surely, work with a certified addiction professional to manage mental health during stressful, overwhelming times.

Follow The Four A’s Of Stress Management

Try to live by the four A’s of stress management – avoid, alter, adapt, and accept. Start by learning to avoid unnecessary stressors or overwhelming situations. Try to cut out individuals that give you anxiety, and teach yourself how to tell people “no.” For alter, focus on how you can change stressful situations that are simply unavoidable. You should also learn to adapt to these daily lifestyle challenges you regularly face. This is usually all about focusing on the bigger picture and rethinking your actual problems. For the final A, we need to learn to accept factors, situations, scenarios, and stressors that we are unable to change. Absolutely, follow the four A’s of stress management to elevate your mental health this year.

Get Better Sleep

sleep

Getting better sleep has always been a key ingredient to stronger mental health. Plenty of nightly sleep helps improve the functioning of your brain, heart, and memory. Ultimately, you need to give your body enough time to go through the necessary sleep cycles – repairing and restoring itself. Try and establish a regular sleep schedule and routine. Teach your brain, mind, and body when it’s time to get to bed. Set a consistent bedtime that you can adhere to throughout the week. A few hours before bed, you should also stay clear of caffeinated beverages, alcohol, heavy foods, or stimulants. Additionally, research indicated that people sleep best when they are in dark locations with cooler temperatures. Indeed, getting better sleep improves mental health and stress management during challenging times.

Establish Coping Skills

Establish a strong set of coping skills that can help with mental health and stress management. The right coping skills depend on your personal preferences, individual scenarios, and passions. Think of the different activities, hobbies, and strategies that help you feel grounded. For many, it can be listening to music, watching TV, or making art. Once you’ve found a few strategies, write them down for later on. Look back to these activities and ideas whenever you see a stressful situation arising.

There are so many effective ways to manage mental health and stay well during stressful times. Start by creating a schedule for physical exercise and activity. Of course, you can still be physically active while socially distancing.  If you struggle with alcohol or chemical substances, consider meeting with a certified mental health professional. You should also commit to better, regular sleep. You should also learn to follow the four A’s of stress management. Even more, teach yourself some prominent, therapist-recommended coping skills. Follow the points above to learn about managing mental health and staying well during stressful times.
