Exercises After Abdominoplasty – What you Need to Know

September 10, 2020 By Namita Nayyar (WF Team)

Abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a procedure done to flatten your abdomen. It is a surgery that allows for the removal of excess fat from the abdominal wall. The skin and muscles around the belly are then tightened to achieve the desired results. After this cosmetic procedure is done, there be maybe a need for you to find an exercising routine that will help maintain the flat tummy. You must be careful about the type of exercises you engage in after a tummy tuck, as any excessive pressure on the stitches may have adverse consequences.

You can resume light exercises after your body starts healing and the swelling goes down a notch. Before beginning any of the activities, you must ensure that it is safe to do so. Doctors recommend light exercises such as walking to help your body resume normal functioning. Here are some of the things to remember as you try to get back into fitness after a tummy tuck.

Talk to your doctor

The 1st thing you should do before you consider any form of exercise is to have a conversation with your doctor. They will assess your healing and advice on the best way forward. Before the surgery, you must be briefed on the healing process to know what goes on. After the procedure, your doctor will give instructions as well as medication. If you cannot reach your doctor, stick to the instructions and only begin exercising after the recommended duration has passed.

It is dangerous to work out while taking medication

After a tummy tuck, you will take with a cocktail of drugs to help you heal and prevent any infections. Reaction to the meds is different for everybody. Exercising after a tummy tuck while taking medications is a risk you do not have to take. Consider beginning light work out after the dosage is over. Let the body recover from the effects of the surgery as well as medication before you start an exercise routine.

Manage your Diet after Abdominoplasty

Diet is one aspect that most people tend to overlook after a successful abdominoplasty or tummy tuck. Eating healthy will help you speed the healing process by furnishing the body with nutrients. Planning your diet is also critical to elevate your energy reserves before you resume working out. A low-carb diet is the best after abdominoplasty as it helps retain the flat tummy.

Find help

You can start exercises in your home, but you do not have to do it alone. You can hire a fitness expert to help you plan your workout and diet to fit your needs. This way, you ensure that you are in safe hands and in the right condition to begin exercising.

Do not go all in at once; it is best to start small then gradually intensify the workouts. Starting with easy exercises allows you to gauge your body to know if it is ready for an intense workout. Walking and aerobics are among those you should start with alongside a nourishing diet.
