Best Age-Friendly Sports for Older Women

October 30, 2019 By Namita Nayyar (WF Team)

If they don’t engage in age-friendly sports for seniors, older women usually pay a high price for inactivity. It has been shown that the average senior spends roughly 10 hours a day sitting or lying down.

Naturally, this makes for a sedentary lifestyle, which, in turn, makes the seniors more susceptible to heart disease, obesity, falls, and early death.

On the other hand, a nursing home abuse victim may find the peace and strength that they need in such age-friendly sports. If they’ve been through a rough time, sports can empower them, as well as clear their minds from the abuse.

So, in today’s article, we’ll talk about some of the best age-friendly sports for older women!

Swimming

Indoor community pools are the perfect fit for older women and seniors alike. They offer the elderly the opportunity to swim lengths, as well as take part in aquafit classes.

The latter type of exercise is known to be beneficial when it comes to aging bones and joints. Swimming classes for elders may also come with warm or hot pool activities.

Yoga and Tai Chi

Even if older women move slowly, this doesn’t mean that they can’t have their mind and body relaxed via sport. In some circumstances, yoga may not be the perfect fit for older women, especially when the trainer doesn’t know how to deal with the elderly.

On the other hand, Tai Chi promotes slow yet complex movements that improve one’s blood flow and help them be one with their body.

Pool

Even though some say pool is not a sport, they are gravely mistaken. Most people see this sport just as moving around a table and kicking some balls.

However, all that moving, reaching, and bending might do wonders for the aching body of an older woman. It may be little, but it can still be considered the perfect exercise for the elderly!

Bowling

As you may know – from movies and cult classics – bowling is the preferred sport of older people. Unlike golf, they don’t have to twist their bodies too hard and risk something happening to their hip.

In this respect, bowling provides most of the things their body needs. This implies bending to grab the bowling ball, training their body to withstand the weight of the bowling ball, and then becoming skilled enough to get a strike.

In short, they train both their body and mind with one simple sport.

The Bottom Line

Finding an age-friendly sport for older women is usually not easy. You have to take into account their medical, as well as physical status – including any other afflictions that may stop them from practicing any sport.

This is why it’s recommended that elderly people don’t start doing whatever they want and research a bit before they play golf, for example, or go biking. They have to make sure that, while exercising enough to keep their body healthy, they don’t damage any other parts of it!
