Nasacort Vs. Flonase: A Guide to Allergy Symptoms Treatment

Allergies can be irritating most of the time, that’s why when some people experience allergy symptoms, they frequently turn to various types of medication to treat their symptoms, unknowing that the drug they are taking may be causing more harm to their bodies.

In order to avoid this, doctors recommend that you consult with them first when it comes to allergies. Even though there are alternative OTC or over-the-counter medications that have been proven to be beneficial, you should still consult a doctor before taking any medication.

Nasacort and Flonase are both anti-allergy medications that were proven by the doctors, and both of these medications have certain similarities and variances in terms of how they are consumed.

Knowing Proper Medication

Nowadays, it’s relatively tough to determine whether or not a medication is effective. Numerous new cases of allergic reaction have resulted in incorrect consultations, while some cases remain unknown to doctors to this day. However, due to the similarity of some symptoms, doctors frequently design anti-allergic drugs for patients to assist them in managing their allergies.

Nasacort and Flonase are both well-known for their diverse clinical applications. Also, both drugs have comparable responses when battling allergies. So naturally, people want to know which of the two is more effective, frequently making comparisons between nasacort vs fonase.

What Is Nasacort?

Nasacort is a nasal spray that can treat allergies in both children and adults. It is available without a prescription, implying that if Nasacort is ineffective after seven days, you should visit your doctor for additional diagnostics. Moreover, nasacort is an affordable drug that can be used by anyone who is experiencing allergy symptoms.

Besides its affordability and availability over the counter without needing a prescription, Nasacort should be one of your first lines of defense against allergies, often used to alleviate allergic rhinitis, hay fever, and upper respiratory allergies. Moreover, Nasacort also helps minimize nasal channel swelling, as it contains a steroid that soothes the nasal canal.

Additionally, it is preferable to take Nasacort because it does not cause the patient to become drowsy or cause them to have a dry mouth, which are the most typical adverse effects associated with oral antihistamine medications.

What Is Flonase?

People tend to believe that different brand names have distinct effects on the body; however, this is not always the case, as some medications may have different names and would have the same impact on a person.

This is true in the case of Nasacort and flonase, wherein flonase is also a nasal spray allergy relief medication. It can also be purchased over the counter for temporary relief; however, it is best to consult your doctor for further testing if it is deemed ineffective after six months.

Flonase is the same medication as Nasarcot; however, flonase is specifically designed to treat nasal allergies and itchy, watery eyes. Additionally, Flonase can be used by children aged four years and older to treat the same conditions as Nasarcot, hay fever, allergic rhinitis, and nasal allergy, among others.

What Are Their Differences?

Flonase and Nasacort are corticosteroid nasal sprays used to treat perennial allergic rhinitis, allergies, and hay fever. Fluticasone is contained in Flonase, whereas triamcinolone is contained in Nasacort; both are glucocorticoid corticosteroids that assist in reducing congestion, postnasal drip, sneezing, as well as other seasonal allergies, including eye symptoms.

Effectiveness

There is one significant difference in the effectiveness of the medications: flonase is an FDA-approved drug used to address allergy symptoms related to the eyes, including watery and itchy eyes, whereas Nasacort is not. As a result, if eye symptoms are a substantial part of your body’s allergic response, you may consider getting a Flonase since it is more likely to alleviate your symptoms effectively.

Usage Instructions

Also, one of the most significant distinctions between Nasacort and Flonase would be the medication’s usage instructions. Nasacort is designed for use only for a brief period, often one week or less. Meanwhile, Flonase is designed for up to 6 months among adults and two months for children.

Drug Interactions

Another distinction between these allergy treatments is drug interactions. When a chemical, such as another drug alters how a drug functions, this is an interaction. This can happen if you take two different medications at the same time. An interaction could be detrimental or prevent a drug from performing as intended.

Nasacort medication may interact with cancer medicines, such as chemotherapy drugs, sirolimus, cyclosporine, basiliximab, tacrolimus, efalizumab, and others. On the other hand, Flonase may interfere with certain HIV medications, including atazanavir, ritonavir, nelfinavir, indinavir, lopinavir, and saquinavir. Also, see your doctor before taking Nasacort or Flonase, especially if you are currently on another steroid medicine.

Side Effects

Both Nasacort and Flonase are considered safe over-the-counter drugs, having a low rate of side effects compared to other prescription medications. Some side effects, on the other hand, may develop. Generally speaking, the side effects of Nasacort and Flonase are very similar, with a few notable variances. Nasacort side effects that are common but do not necessitate medical treatment include the following:

  • Sneezing
  • Sore Throat
  • Headache
  • Cough

Meanwhile, Flonase side effects that are common but do not necessitate medical treatment include the following:

  • Asthma Symptoms
  • Bloody Nose
  • Sore Throat
  • Cough

Which is Better: Nasacort or Flonase?

Comparing the two medications is challenging since you must look at the effects on different people because not everyone has the same reaction to the medication. Many are unsure which medication is superior depending on their personal experience and the doctor who recommended it.

Furthermore, both Nasacort and Flonase drugs are not only similar but also comparably effective, and choosing among the two medications is frequently a matter of personal choice, availability, and cost. On the other hand, Flonase is probably the better option whenever you’re suffering from eye problems as a result of your allergy symptoms.

Final Thoughts

Nasacort and Flonase have both been shown to be helpful against allergy symptoms because both medications were developed to combat those allergies while causing the least amount of adverse effects.

The medication of these two drugs differs significantly in terms of the preference of the individuals for which they believe is the most effective. However, the most important thing to remember is that you should always seek medical advice before administering drugs to yourself.
