How Athletic Clothing Came to Be Coined as “Athleisure”

December 25, 2020 By Namita Nayyar (Editor in chief)

If you’ve been outside in the last year, you probably noticed more and more people adopting a new style of clothing called athleisure or athleisure wear. Wearing clothing deemed athleisure is usually reserved for exercising or other athletic activities, but it’s been slowly trickling into other areas of fashion, and people are wearing athleisure to more than just the gym these days. If you’re wondering how athletic clothing came to be coined “athleisure,” keep reading to learn all about it.

What Is Athleisure?

Athleisure clothing is comfortable, versatile, casual, stylish, and colorful (sometimes). Most people wear athleisure for working out or doing yoga, while others simply like it because it’s comfortable and stylish. But where did the term “athleisure” come from?

Where the Term Athleisure Came From

The concept of athleisure isn’t a new one. In fact, in the 1970s, health and fitness companies started promoting casual wear due in part to the fact that people started to prioritize comfort when it came to clothing. Also, studies were showing that comfort increased job performance and creativity.

Since then, the athleisure market has exploded with brands reinventing themselves and revamping their product line to provide a more modern look.

Types of Athleisure

Athleisure comes in many forms, including:

  • Leggings
  • Yoga pants
  • Sweatshirts
  • Sweat pants
  • Track pants
  • T-shirts
  • Sneakers
  • Shorts
  • Gym tanks
  • Jogger pants

Athleisure (the term) has likely sprung from the concept that people are trying to live healthier lives or just like comfortable clothing for when they’re doing leisure activities.

How to Style Athleisure Wear

Now that you know what it is and the types available to you, you can begin thinking about how to incorporate athleisure wear into your own wardrobe.

There are a few ways to style athleisure wear to make it both functional and appealing. These are just a few:

  • Matching your sports bra or gym tank with your sneakers
  • Accessorize with sunglasses, a fitted baseball cap, or a handbag
  • Pair your athleisure wear with a cute pair of boots
  • Get matching slides
  • Check out what some of your favorite celebs are doing for inspiration
  • Find a supersize graphic waist bag to go with your ensemble

Champion has all kinds of athleisure wear that’s easy to mix and match, and offers styles for men, women, and children. Champion can be your one-stop shop for comfortable, versatile athleisure wear. From slides and sneakers to hoodies and t-shirts, you’ll be able to find what you need no matter your style.

A Trend for the Ages

Athleisure is likely not a trend — because it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Thanks to popular brands like Champion, athleisure wear is probably here to stay. People want more from their workout clothes than they did in the past. They want to be able to style it up or dress it down, and Champion clothing can give you just what you’re looking for in a variety of sizes, colors, and styles.
