Biotech Skin Care: The Sustainable Beauty Trend

September 15, 2021 By Namita Nayyar (Editor in chief)

Today, we all are facing extreme environmental and weather conditions that affect our skin and body. The skin is one of the most sensitive parts of our body and thus, needs extreme care. Hence, we use different skincare products to protect it. According to Gagandeep (Yogic-Experience.com) who is a skincare expert with a decade of experience “Biotech skincare products have been designed with healthy and natural microbial fermentation, which helps rejuvenate skin and protect it further.”

These products combine natural microbes and engineered DNA of microbes that can fight a range of skin-related issues, and it might help in better skin tone. Our nature has enormous healing properties, and for that reason, Biotech skincare is great for healthy recovery.

He goes on to add “Everyone can use them as they come in a wide range and are selectable based on skincare needs. These products combine nature and science and are animal-friendly, vegan, and eco-friendly, making them safe to use. The ingredients in the products get easily absorbed in the skin and start working. The job is done from the skin core and shows effective results. Biotech skincare products work faster than other products, and you can notice the change within a few days.”

Biotech Skin Care: How it Works

The most common form of biotechnology used in the production of skincare ingredients is through a fermentation process, share Nicola Kropach, GM of Aesthetics Rx. She further adds “bacteria (good ones of course), fungi, yeast and enzymes, all living substances are used in the process because of their ability to produce mass cultivation and diverse ranges of end products. There are a number of stages in the process but it begins with propagation of the starter culture.”

A good example is the bacterial fermentation of a substrate such as a simple carbohydrates like glucose or sucrose obtained from sugar cane, which through the fermentation process converts to Lactic acid for use in skincare. Containers called bioreactors provide a suitable environment with the right temperature and pH where the substrate, in this case, sucrose is applied to the bacteria medium in the bioreactor, a culture is grown and Lactic acid is the output of the fermentation.

Large scale production of Lactic acid can be achieved with much larger bioreactors that can hold thousands of litres. Plant cells can be used in this fermentation process as well. With biotechnology we can quite literally grow our ingredients in a lab, and they are bioidentical to the original plant, yet the impact on nature is completely different.

Sheila Chaiban, CEO of One Ocean Beauty, agrees that Biotech Skin care products are of great advantage to the skin and ones overall health. She adds “At One Ocean Beauty, we use cutting-edge Blue Biotechnology, natural molecules obtained from living marine microorganisms and reproduce them in a lab environment through bio-fermentation. Through this process we produce clinically-proven, age-defying marine ingredients without negatively impacting the marine environment and its biodiversity. This ensures the best quality ingredients and consistency of results”

Biotechnology vs. Lab-made Products

There is a key difference between synthetic/artificial lab produced ingredients and ingredients made from biotechnology.

A chemist makes synthetic ingredients from chemicals in a lab to produce an artificial version of a natural ingredient. Whereas an ingredient made from biotechnology is when the chemist isolates a natural living element and then replicates and grows it using techniques such as fermentation. The biotechnologist doesn’t attempt to modify nature and reproduce it with chemicals, rather, they use living natural extracts including plant cells, bacteria, and yeast to grow and produce bioidentical ingredients.
