Honey: A Treat For Your Skin

November 22, 2016 By Namita Nayyar (WF Team)

Honey SKIN

Pour it on your food, stir it into your milk, dip your fruits in it, apply it to your face or hair, or simply pour a teaspoon down your throat. Whichever way you have it, rest assured, it’s a treat for your health, skin and body.

Honey contains small amounts of a wide array of vitamins and minerals, including niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. Along with its multiple vitamin content, honey is a humectant, which means it attracts and retains moisture.  Honey also acts as an anti-irritant, making it suitable for sensitive skin and baby care products–and it contains a variety of flavonoids and phenolic acids which act as antioxidants, scavenging and eliminating free radicals.

Honey has been used in beauty care for ages, and if you have ever tried honey in a formula for your skin or hair, you know why. There is simply no sweeter way to bring a smooth glow to your skin and hair than with glorious golden honey.

Discover a few ancient secrets, right here

  • Honey Bath: Add 1/4 cup or so of honey to your bath. Mmmm—sweet, silky, and luscious skin.
  • Honey Cleansing Scrub: Mix 1 tablespoon of honey with 2 tablespoons finely ground almonds and 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice. Rub gently onto face. Rinse off with warm water.
  • Skin Toner: Puree an apple with one tablespoon honey in a blender. Apply this mixture for face and leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse with cool water. This makes a great toner.
  • Firming Face Mask: Whisk together 1 tablespoon honey, 1 egg white, 1 teaspoon glycerin and enough flour to form a paste (approximately 1/4 cup). Smooth over face and throat. Leave on 10 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.
  • Smoothing Skin Lotion: Mix 1 teaspoon honey with 1 teaspoon vegetable oil and 1/4 teaspoon lemon juice. Rub into hands, elbows, heels and anywhere that feels dry. Leave on 10 minutes. Rinse off with water. If you have a dry skin, take one tablespoon honey in a bowl and add one teaspoon milk. Mix well and smooth it over face. Rinse off with lukewarm water after ten minutes. Your skin will feel soft instantly.
  • Hair Shine: Stir 1 teaspoon honey into 4 cups (1 quart) warm water. Blondes may wish to add a squeeze of lemon. After shampooing, pour mixture through hair. Do not rinse out. Dry as normal.
  • Hair Conditioner :Mix half a cup of honey with two tablespoons olive oil. If your hair is very dry, add a three tablespoon. Section off your hair and coat it well with the mixture. Cover your hair with a shower cap so you don’t mess up the entire house. In addition, the shower cap traps heat from your scalp, enabling the oils to penetrate further. Wash off after half an hour.

More Healing Properties

Applying honey on cuts and wounds helps them heal faster, as honey controls anti-oxidants which absorb the oxygen from the air and help the wound heal faster, without scarring. The ancient Egyptians used honey to treat cataracts, cuts and burns. Hippocrates, the Greek physician, prepared honey-based cures for skin disorders and ulcers. During World War I, German doctors used honey mixed with cod liver oil to surgically dress soldiers’ wounds.

To sum up some unique facts about honey:

  • Honey is really safe for very sensitive skin and rejuvenates your skin
  • Honey will nourish your skin and make it smoother
  • Honey (only the pure one, not adding by another ingredient) won’t irritate your skin
  • Honey definitely can make your skin skin feel smooth
  • Honey can lighten your skin
  • Honey is a natural antioxidant
  • Honey can heal and prevents pimples and freckles. Really good for teenager!
