Lara Kerner on Music, Fitness, and Living Without Limits

Namita Nayyar:

You’ve spoken about women needing to be “resilient, adaptable, and strong.” Can you share a specific failure or rejection that later became the foundation for one of your best creative works?

Lara Kerner:

“The most profound catalyst for my art was the sudden, tragic loss of my father in a fatal car crash. At the devastating moment he passed away, we had actually not spoken for an entire year. I loved my father deeply, but at that time, I allowed my ego to dictate my actions and drive a wedge between us over a disagreement I can no longer even remember.

That immense loss shattered my perspective and completely reshaped my writing. It stripped away all ornament and taught me to create from a place of absolute, unfiltered truth. It became the foundation of my resilience, teaching me to express exactly what I feel, when I feel it, with straight-to-the-vein honesty. You never know when it will be too late to lay down your pride and speak from the heart.”

Namita Nayyar:

Having lived on three continents before the UK, what is one cultural lesson about success that only Africa taught you, one from the US, and one from Europe?

Lara Kerner:

“Each continent gifted me a distinct, vital piece of my philosophy on success:

From Africa: I learned the power of strategic containment and sacred timing. Africa taught me to cultivate my creative projects quietly in the shadows, protecting the energy of a vision, and only unveiling it to the world when it is fully formed and unshakeable.

From the United States: I absorbed the culture of unbridled ambition. The US taught me to demolish self-imposed limits, to believe fiercely in my own value, and to back up big dreams with immediate, fearless, and massive physical action.

From Europe (specifically France): I learned to tune out the collective skepticism. Europe taught me to never let the limitations of others define my boundary. If someone tells you a dream is impossible, it is only impossible for them—not for you. If your mind can vividly construct the vision, the path to realize it already exists.”

Namita Nayyar:

Beyond “Crave For You” and the upcoming run of songs, what is the next visual or acting project where we’ll see you merge your screen presence with your music?

Lara Kerner:

“That is a brilliant question. I am currently developing an incredibly exciting film project where I will be interpreting the life of a globally famous singer, allowing me to fully merge my dramatic screen acting with my musical identity. However, honoring the lesson I brought back with me from my time in Africa, I am keeping the finer details close to my chest at this early stage until the production is ready to be revealed.”

Namita Nayyar:

In a niche-driven music industry, you’re carving out a space that refuses to choose between pop grandeur, athletic discipline, and dramatic depth. What does long-term success look like for you—five years from now?

Lara Kerner:

“All my life, people have tried to force me to choose, telling me that if you excel in one world, you cannot belong to another. I completely refuse to strip away my colors or dim my facets just to fit into a neat, predictable box that makes others feel safe. My father raised me with the unwavering conviction that I can be whoever I want and achieve whatever I choose to do in this life.

Five years from now, long-term success for me is defined by absolute artistic freedom—consistently writing, acting, and singing alongside exceptional creators who share my core values, while completely maintaining my personal health, running in the open parks, and staying true to my athletic roots. Musically, it looks like taking this fusion globally, performing multiple live shows across different countries, connecting deeply with audiences in the US, Europe, Africa, and perhaps even India.”

Namita Nayyar:

Finally, if a young woman today is trying to stop “performing” her life and start channeling it, what is the single most practical piece of advice you would give her—starting tomorrow morning?

Lara Kerner:

“Starting tomorrow morning, stop apologizing for the space you occupy and start listening fiercely to your own internal voice. When you step out to perform, create, or speak, find that exact, quiet spot inside yourself where there is no expectation, no judgment, and no desire to please—only pure pleasure. Drop your defenses, let go of the outcome, and let the energy move through you raw. Whatever comes out in that moment is exactly what is meant to be.”

Rapid-Fire Segment

Morning person or night owl? “I am a natural morning person, though during the long summer months, I love leaning into the energy of later nights.”
One song you wish you had written? “I Was Here” by Beyoncé.”
Heels or bare feet on stage? “Heels—always with intent.”
Last thing you do before sleep? “I completely relax my body, execute a series of gentle, fluid stretches to release the day, and say a prayer.”
Crave For You in three emojis: “(Heart, Fire, Water).”
