Premature Ovarian Failure (POF): Dietary & Lifestyle Management Tips

January 24, 2018 By Namita Nayyar (Editor in chief)

Premature Ovarian Failure

Also known as primary ovarian insufficiency syndrome. It is loss of normal function of your ovaries before age 40. If your ovaries fail, they don’t produce normal amounts of the hormone estrogen or release eggs regularly.

Your crucial aim should be improving your egg health, nourishing the endocrine system and maintaining your ovaries, Fallopian tubes and uterus in good health. With these, you will be able to ovulate an egg every month regularly. With regular ovulation you will be able to decipher signs of ovulation. In case you indulge in copulation with your partner around the ovulation time, the chances of attaining pregnancy increase tremendously.

Staying away from alcohol use and smoking should be your priority. There are a number of ways that will help in sustaining the body’s normal functions. They may not cure your ovarian functions or prevent POF if the cause is a genetic or some chromosome defect.

Premature Ovarian Failure

Nutrition plays a vital role in keeping a healthy body and its reproductive system. The base of your health lies in the food you eat every day and makes a large amount of impact on your fertility system. Adequate healthy  nutrition in our food keeps our hormones balanced and promotes antioxidants that look after the eggs and tissues of our reproductive system.

Listed below are some suggestions that will help you support the important parts of your reproductive system.

Calcium and Vitamin D

Premature Ovarian Failure

POFcauses production of low levels of estrogen hormone. Lack of this hormone in the body may put it in having a higher risk of developing osteoporosis. This medical condition weakens your bones and makes them brittle and fragile from loss of tissue. For preventing the ill effects of osteoporosis, you should be eating Calcium and Vitamin-D-rich diet regularly.

Consult your treating doctor to know if you needed to take Calcium and Vitamin D supplements. Vitamin D helps in absorbing calcium in your body. Both these nutrition help strengthen your bone density.

Eating Maca

Premature Ovarian Failure

Maca nourishes not only the endocrine system, but help in keeping all the hormone-balancing glands healthy and fully functional i.e. the adrenal, thyroid and pituitary glands. Maca is known as super-food that helps in protecting the body from the stress related ill effects and supports egg health. It is known to increase sexual desires.

Shatavari

In the Indian healing practice, the Shatavari herb has a unique place for thousands of years. Its botanical name is Asparagus racemosus meaning “one who possesses 100 husbands”. Steroidal Saponins are the main element of the herb that helps in regulating the menstrual cycle and is also known as estrogen hormone modulator.

The adaptogenic and immune-modulating properties of the herb are helpful in curing stress-related issues and immune-mediated infertility problems. The herb is also known for nourishing the ovum.

Vitex

Premature Ovarian Failure

Vitex is an awesome shrub mainly found in Greece and Italy. The herb is very popular in the European countries for correcting the gynecological imbalances. The berries of the shrub do not contain any hormones, but possess the ability to support the essential hormones in a gentle way indirectly.

Vitex plays a supportive and regulatory effect on the so-called “master” pituitary gland. The gland controls important body functions like sending chemical signals to the ovaries and ordering them the quantity of hormones they should make. This kind of signal-communication is better known as the hormonal feedback loop.

Royal Jelly

Premature Ovarian Failure

As the name suggests, the royal jelly is produced by the nurse bees from their head glands to feed all the larvae bees initially, irrespective of the gender or rank they belong to. The drone (males) and worker (sterile female) bees are fed with the royal jelly only for three days, but queen (fertile female) larvae are fed with this exceptional diet all the way through their developmental stages. The royal pulpy extract is helpful in keeping the reproductive hormones balanced. As the delicious stuff helps in providing support to the endocrine system, this is most advantageous for the individuals who are prone to diseases of hormonal imbalances like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) or irregular periods.

Several studies have shown the Royal Jelly possesses the tendency to ape estrogen hormone. So, women who have low levels of estrogen may benefit to make up for the hormone. The pulpy stuff has the ample amount of amino acids, energizing sugars, vitamins D & E, lipids, protein, iron and calcium. In fact, all the properties the Royal Jelly contains are essential for good health and smooth functioning of body organs.

Balance your dietary intake with regular exercise routine, stress management & relaxation practices like, massage therapy.

Exercise

Premature Ovarian Failure

Do weight-bearing exercises such as walking and strength-training exercises for your upper body. Inactive lifestyle makes it difficult for the body to cleanse your system from excess hormones and toxins. With exercise, your heart beats faster and pumps fresh and fresh oxygenated blood to the body organs which regulate the body functions. This increased blood circulation eliminates the toxins in your body. Exercising for at least 30-minutes-each-day x 5-days-a-week activates your sweat glands that help in not only cooling your body temperature but also eliminating toxins from your body.

You are advised to do weight-bearing exercises such as walking.

Self Fertility Massage

Premature Ovarian Failure

The techniques taught in Self Fertility Massage help the body to become balanced, have healthy circulation, increaseimmune system health, decrease stress, and much much more. The fertility massage helps in strengthening the hormonal feedback loop which is essential for upholding the hormonal balance. Besides, it improves circulation to the ovaries, uterus, and the fallopian tubes, transporting fresh, nutrient and oxygenated blood to the eggs. This blood, in turn, improves the uterine tone and eliminates toxins from the body. The fertility massage can be performed by you, you and you on yourself in the home comfort.

Fertility massage is a cheap and very effective procedure that can increase your chances of conception. Another good thing about it is that it can be combined with various fertility treatment you may be undergoing.

Take good care of your body!
