Wear Red Day: Take Your Heart Disease Seriously

February 2, 2024 By Namita Nayyar (Editor in chief)

February is celebrated as the Heart Month, primarily because it is a time when many people reflect on matters of the heart, including love and relationships. It is a fitting opportunity to also emphasize the importance of heart health.

Each year on the first Friday in February

, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, The Heart Truth®, and others around the country celebrate National Wear Red Day® to bring greater attention to heart disease as the leading cause of death for Americans and promote steps people can take to protect their heart.

Signs and Symptoms of Heart Attack

If you have any of these signs, call emergency and get to a hospital right away.

Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of your chest. It lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back.
Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.
Other signs such as breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

Women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. Women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain.

Here are a few more facts about women and heart attacks:

Women are more likely to have more than one heart attack symptom.
Many women report that something felt off before they had a heart attack, although they could not pinpoint why.
It is better to get checked out for a potential heart attack, even if you are not sure that is what it is.

Wishing you a happy National Wear Red Day!
