TAMPA, Fla. (Ivanhoe Broadcast News) -- Ninety percent
of adults will have back pain at least once during their lifetime. The last
thing many people want to have is surgery. There is now an option that has many
people finding the relief they want without going under the knife.
Last year, Rick Terrana hurt his back. He couldn't walk or sit in a chair
without being in pain. Rick's back is better now. In fact, he recently ran his
first half marathon with his wife, Talpha.
"I really felt good to cross the finish line, and most importantly, I had a lot
of pain, but none of it was back pain," Rick says.
Before Rick said yes to surgery, he tried one last treatment.
The DRX9000 is a machine that literally pulls the spine apart -- relieving the
pressure on the discs. Luis Crespo, M.D., a physician in Tampa, Fla., says the
technology is so precise they can pinpoint the exact problem area.
"By changing the level and the angle of the pull, we can target the specific
disc that's affected instead of just pulling the entire spine," says Dr. Crespo.
"It's a very restricted, well-defined pull right in the area of the problem,"
Rick says.
This treatment is for patients with any disc related problem. Studies show nine
out of 140 patients significantly reduce their back pain after 20 treatments.
Dr. Crespo also says there are no side effects. "I can't hurt you by
decompressing you," he says.
"This thing snapped me right out of it in a matter of 10 or 20 treatments," Rick
says. It saved him from surgery and instead put him on a new path. "I'm running
more and more all the time. My goal now is to run a full marathon."
The DRX9000 is FDA-cleared and used by medical doctors and chiropractors. The
cost of the standard treatment round of 20 sessions starts around $3,500. Not
all insurance companies will cover the cost.
