The Calories You’re Really Burning

The Calories You’re Really Burning
Reported July 31, 2006

LOS ANGELES (Ivanhoe Broadcast News) — You work hard. You sweat. You eat healthy. But do you have the right tools to really lose weight? Now, a new device can give you all the info you need for success.

Biljana Mihailovic has tried everything to lose weight. “I would not eat at all for a week, or I take fat-burning pills, or I would work out like crazy for a month or two,” she says. But today, she has lost 18 pounds and kept it off.

“I feel great. I feel energized,” she says. The secret to her success? Mihailovic took the Body Fat Analysis test.

“I love it because it really helps people understand their bodies better,” certified nutrition specialist Carolyn Katzin, MS, CNS, creator of The DNA Diet, tells Ivanhoe.

For the test, Katzin measured Mihailovic’s weight and waist. Then, electrodes attached to the hands and feet sent signals through the muscles in the body. A computer program calculated her body fat, metabolic rate and told Mihailovic how many calories Mihailovic burns at rest.

Mihailovic’s print-out showed she’s in the normal range — what most people fall under. She burns about 1,400 calories at rest a day. To lose weight, she’ll have to consume 500 calories less than that. But she can add a couple hundred more if she exercises.

Katzin says you may need more or less depending on your metabolic rate.

“It’s not about one size fits all anymore,” she says. “This is really personalizing your health for yourself.”

Knowing how many calories she really burns helped Mihailovic create a successful eating and exercise plan. “I can run more now; it’s a lot easier for me to exercise and do everything,” she says. And she says this time, the weight’s staying off for good!

Katzin says patients don’t feel anything during the test and adds it’s completely accurate as long as you drink water and stay away from caffeine ahead of time. You can get the Body Fat Analysis test at health clubs around the country or at a nutritionist’s office. It ranges from about $30 to $70.
