The Island of Guernsey is located in the English Channel, roughly 30 miles from the French coast and some 70 miles from the south coast of England. The Island has an area of approximately 24 square miles and a population of 62,000.
The Bailiwick of Guernsey includes a number of islands in addition to Guernsey- Alderney, Sark, Herm, Jethou, Brecqhou and Lihou.
Although Guernsey is geographically closer to the Normandy coast than the south coast of England, it is a dependency of the British Crown.
The Lieutenant Governor is Her Majestys personal representative and official channel of communication between the Crown, the UK Government and the Bailiwick.

Health Professionals working in Guernsey and Alderney must be registered with the Health Professions Council. Good facilities and up to date equipment are obviously important and are well resourced in both those areas, but it is patient care and patient outcomes which inspire the staff and drive work. Allied Health Professionals are an essential and significant part of work forces and play a vital role in health care delivery. Their skills and expertise are key to the ongoing assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of patients.
The ways in which AHPs work here in Guernsey mirrors that found in the United Kingdom: although with the many opportunities and changes in the organisation and delivery of patient care that are currently being introduced here in Guernsey, we are seeing a substantial shift in the emphasis from hospital to community care and this is reflected in recent service developments of multi-disciplinary, community and rapid response teams. The investigative, rehabilitation and direct treatment AHPs are seeing substantial changes in their roles with increased professionalism in areas such as direct reporting of results and investigations, recommendations for treatment and direct responsibility for patient and client care.
The Health & Social Services Department is responsible to the States of Guernsey, to promote, protect and improve the health and social well-being of the people of Guernsey and Alderney.
The Department has a wide mandate delivering a diverse range of services including preventing, diagnosing and treating people with illnesses and disease and caring for them in its hospital services and supporting people in the community, including people with disabilities.
The Department also provides social services, including ensuring the welfare and protection of children and promoting, protecting and improving personal, environmental and public health for residents within the Bailiwick of Guernsey.
HSSD 2020 Vision Survey
People are living longer and there will be less working-aged men and women paying the taxes and Social Security contributions that fund health and social care for the Bailiwick of Guernsey.
The HSSD is therefore looking at what will be required to provide Guernsey, Alderney and Herm with adequate and affordable health and social care in the years up to 2020 and what steps are needed to get there.
We have called this process our 2020 Vision and it will help the HSSD and the States to decide what actions need to be taken to enable people to live healthy and independent lives.
In reviewing the current model, the HSSD needs to try to predict what the future population will need from its health and social care services and to consider how the Bailiwick can pay for these services.
